Help with Gun shipping

Here we go again.
Just wondering about selling you a rifle and shipping it to you?
I am allowed to do that right, I dont sell or ship much and when ever i go to ship or sell i allways wonder about it.
should i ship it through a dealer, that way i know its not a --------xxx on the other end getting a super accurate rifle?

You can ship it via USPS/ fedex/UPS to the recivers FFL dealer w/ no problems unless the person behind the counter is mindless.

You cannot ship a firearm to a private individual(with a few odd exceptions). You MUST ship to an FFL dealer. Do yourself a big favor and familiarize yourself with this page:

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html

You are dealing with Federal law here, make sure you know what you are doing before you do it. Don't be afraid to call your local ATF office if you aren't sure about something. I have always found them to be friendly and helpful - no kidding.

Good luck,
Erik

A private individual can ship to a FFL if they will accept it from a Private Party (meaning you). You may be able to ship a rifle within your same state without going thru a FFL
-First sell the rifle
-Have them send you a copy of the FFL they want you to send it to, it should have the address on it.
-Next check the FFL YOU are shipping to to make sure its valid and up to date via this link..https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/
-I always include a copy of the FFL its going to inside the package just incase it get opened or comes open for some reason.
-Package it the way YOU would want to receive it...I hate getting shit packaged half assed. I would wrap the bolt separately if its a long gun.
-UPS does have some strange rules and apparently they are dependant upon where you live!!...USPS is very easy to deal with...I've never used Fed X

Hope this helps

I have been selling a large collection of Sako rifles, and sent all thru the USPS insured at full value. I have read many horror stories about UPS and FEDX and I will not use either of those.

I had two very expensive Sakos arrive at the sellers destlinations, in the same week with stocks broken at the wrist. They were immediately photographed. You must retain your post office receipts; without a receipt, even if insured, you will receive nothing. Now, go to the USPS web site and read carefully their packing instructions. If not packed accordingly, your claim will be denied. Suggestion: I should have sent these in hard cases, but instead used cardboard gun boxes.

USPS will set up a claim file, and ask you for the original receipts from the outgoing PO, and copy of the receipt you should have sent to the buyer. You will need to submit an appraisal for the gun in same condition as it was when shipped (I went to my FFL dealer for these). Initially the USPS claims dept. will send you a denial letter stating unlicensed individuals are not permitted to send firearms even if they go to a licensed dealer. This not true. You need to reply quoting the applicable BATF regulation. It took me four months to receive payment from the USPS. I talked to a guy yesterday who said he settled a claim with FEDX after waiting 11 months. Good luck!!

Another thing to consider is regardless of your shipper (I use UPS) you are best served and will talk with someone who has experience and its cheaper to go straight to the main UPS hub. Stay away from the satellite franchise stores. They tend to employ "less than knowledgeable folk" and are in it to make a good deal more money off you on top of the norm shipping fee.

Thanks for the links, Erud & CigarCop.
I have a unique situation. I live in a motorhome and travel around the country, staying a month here and a month there, etc. I bought an action while in Ohio and also ordered a stock and barrel. An Ohio friend is building the rifle for me. When he gets in done, I will be in TX (I'm currently in Alabama) and I would like him to ship it there. My mailing address is in South Dakota so this could get complicated.

Nomad47,

You do have a unique situation. By the time you jump through all the hoops to get your rifle you will probably wished you just drove to Ohio to pick it up. Good luck, Brian Brown.

Well, as a last resort, another friend is coming to TX from OH in January to hunt wild hogs. He can bring it with him if I don't get it before then.
