Help with bullet selection

I'm looking for suggestions for a 100-300yd bullet. I have a Savage target action, 1x8 twist, 30" McGowen BBL chambered in 6BR.

I've been looking at the 95gr BIB or the 80gr Fowlers.

I've been shooting Berger 105gr VLDs with Varget. Getting good results from this, but was curious if there is something better for the distance I should be trying, or should I just stick with the Berger 105s?

I have RL-15, RL-17 and Varget at my disposal.

Thanks for the help,
Bill

Based on that article I switched to the Fowlers. See the targets on my other thread (2015BR pressure).

I will most likely get some BIB 95s too.

6mm bullet selection

Howdy !

My 2cents...

If wind is not a problem at ranges where you usually shoot, you might be able to use Berger 88LD to good advantage.
These are FB bullets w/ a long aero nose.

Also, when sorting by wt, I've found no 6mm bullets of any make more consistent than vanilla Sierra 6mm 85HPBTs.
Suprising yes, but true. Not suprising... they group well !

Also have seen good results w/ Sierra 95MKs.

Have not tried yet, but wonder about Berger 90s, for ranges that you mention. Gotta box that I need to tryout.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Thanks for the advice. I'm checking on bullet availability now. Going to give the 80gr Fowler and 95gr BIB a try first. Considering I'm limited to 300yds I wish I had a 10 twist, but hopefully they will shoot lights out in my 8 twist as well.

I shoot in local "shoot what you brought" matches, and I'm hoping to gain an edge this year. It seems like the matches are won at the 200 and 300yd line. Hopefully with some practice, help from you guys, and a little luck thrown in for good measure I'll get my groups where I need them. ;D

Thanks,
Bill

i have been thinking really seriously about adding a Krieger 6mm 10 twist to my long range bench rifle rig, or building a 6br 10 twist rifle just for the BIB 95gr bullets. I think this would make for a very accurate middle of the summer (no wind) rifle for these parts of the country, I just jumped into the ppc world so it may be a while but i do think that this is what i will do, I dont know a lot about much but from what i read and have learned it seems to make good sense!! I already have an 8 twist dasher so the 10twist 6br would fill my void! Good luck and let us know what you end up doing! Lee

My barrel is an 8 twist. With groups like this I see no reason to add another twist to the mix. This group was shot yesterday with the 80 gr Fowlers.

Bradley,

Awesome group! Have you run these out past 100yds yet, and if so what kind of groups are you getting?

Do you mind sharing your load data and seating depth?

My gun is set up with a .1137 freebore and I'm currently running the 105gr VLDs about .015 in the lands.

Thanks,
Bill

Repeating from my other thread:

Just shot H322 tonight with the 80 gr Fowlers.

It blew away everything I have tried so far.

Looks like anything between 29 and 30 would just hammer... looks like 29.6 was the magic load in the cool air, but there was little distinction in any of the groups from 29 to 30, the powder is not "peaky". I did switch to Fed 205M primers just to be sure the primer was not too hot.

6BR
29.6 H322
205M primer
+15 into lands after touching
Fowler 80 grain moly coated

Looks like several groups in the high 1s. Calm cool air about 55 degrees at 100 yards.

The R-15 appears to be very temperature sensitive with this bullet, as the loads that shot 3 weeks ago when it was 75 degrees plus will not shot shoot now without fliers (they appear to be below the node now). I shot the R-15 all the way up to 33 grains with no pressure (and they shot pretty good--- I saved them for foulers when it was hot and now they are not over pressure). These loads would should show extractor marks last month.

So, I guess I have a lot to learn about these faster powders.

The H322 gives low recoil, burns super clean, and shoots little teeny bugholes. I will have to see if it is temperature sensitive as it warms up.

I will also say this... I am just trying to learn how to shoot benchrest. I just purchased my first benchrest this year, and this is my first real benchrest rifle. I will tell you one thing... I shoot hard hold. I cannot shoot free recoil at all. I come from a highpower background, I like a hard cheek weld, and the gun in my shoulder. I have no clue how to shoot with the gun just floating on the rest and rear bag. I guess I suck, but I am shooting better than I ever have from the rest after I gave up on free recoil. Even after I bought the cool front and rear rest that goes with my stock.

I will try the cci 450 with the same load and see what happens.

I've been shooting a 1-10 twist Lilja with Great Luck & the 95 BIB's shoot tighter at 200 yds than 100yds. The 80 gr Fowler's don't quite shoot as well, still experimenting. I am not shooting Moly on these bullets Your H322 load is Shooting great, I'll have to try it & bump down a little for no Moly on the bullets. Mike Bryant is currently building a 1-8 twist 6BR I'll let you know my results. Don't overlook the 87 Vmax they shoot well for a production bullet. Also had Great results with the 80 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip & 30 gr IMR3031

My 6BR likes the 80g FB Berger out to 200 yds, over 30.5g of Varget, they shoot in the low .2MOA, and sometimes even better, when I'm on my game.
Another thing, remember to recheck the distance to your lands, about every 200 to 300 rounds, erosion will cause your numbers to increase, and soon your shooting with a jump, not a jam. It might make a difference.
