Help with a old Remington model 24 .22

Well Paul has done it again, this time he has given me his mothers old Remington model 24 .22. He said that it sat in the corner of her kitchen for thirty or so years before she passed away and maybe ten years in his gun room. This was a ranch gun that saw it's fair share of shooting at sage rats and anything else unlucky enough to get in range of it.

Since I like to waste money trying to fix old guns that simply should be left in the corner of a room or over a fire place, here i go again. I stripped it down and cleaned it and the only thing I found missing is the screw in the photos on the receiver. It will now feed a round into the chamber that falls right back out onto the floor at my feet.

My question is, is this missing screw the problem or it just one more problem as well the one of the round falling out when the action is cocked back and put into battery? Another question is what is the missing screw called, i haven't found a good photo of it on any of the receiver parts breakdowns I have looked at so far. Thanks

There's a discussion in the Remington forum about a mdl 24 over at Rimfire Central. Pictures show the screw you are missing pretty clearly.

Don't hold me to this, but I think that mod 24 is from the same time frame as the mod 11 shot gun that was made on a Browning's patent, I think that they also used the Browning patent for the 22 auto and possibly some of the more common parts like the screws would interchange with the Browning 22 auto, good luck, John

I hope that you aren't using that red, clear and blue "thing" in image one on firearms.

Model 24 parts are hard to find. Not sure what the screw is called or used for and like you didn’t find any parts diagrams with it. I compared mine to a newer Browning version and it does not have that screw in the receiver. Sorry not much help. If I figure out how to take out the screw without breakjng the rifle I will. At least that would get the specs on the screw and see if Fastenal has it.

Thanks for the help guys.
speedy396 please don't take that screw out just to help me. The not so good photos i have found of the screw head look to be a security screw head, some ace hardware stores used to carry the tool for that.

Mark W, thanks for that photo. I don't remember seeing that combo in any of the model 24 or 241 parts beak downs but I will look again here shortly. Thanks guys

@bluealtered i looked and couldn’t find it in any parts diagrams either, but it‘s the same in both model 24s that I have here.

Thanks Mark, I guess for now it will just another corner proper upper.

If that gun has sentimental value, you can probably pick up another one for parts fairly cheaply. That‘s why I have two of them now. I inherited one that was missing the tube magazine and I could never find a replacement magazine that fit properly, so I bought a whole other gun for $200 and it turned out to be in much better shape than the one that I inherited. Now I have two functional guns with one magazine….lol

@bluealtered here is the assembly that’s screwed into that hole.

Thats the cartridge stop plunger, spring and retaining screw. They are hard to find but do and save a search on eBay and they will eventually come up. RFC has some info here:

This is exactly how I end up with three of everything...lol

Bingo! Thank you everybody for your help with this project. Now I know what it is and what it's called. Stage two, ... the hunt begins!
