Help with 300 yard .22LR Match

Considering trying out a 300 yard .22 match and any help would be appreciated. I’ve got an old Stevens 416 that I’m mounting my Unertl 10x too, but currently my front base is way to low, ordered a 1/2” and an 1” front to try. With a 99 dollar special scope I shot a 3.4” group at 200, not sure if that’s great or not? Someone want to give me some 300 yard match pointers?8F8AD8FB-CECA-4E77-A899-9725FDF2252F.jpeg

Get a good zero. Use the best ammo you feel comfortable buying. Practice in various wind speeds and directions as much as possible and take notes. Don't expect to win your first time out.

Have fun.

Be sure you have enough scope adjustment. 3.4" group is not bad. What ammo are you using? Are you shooting paper or steel? The most important thing when shooting long range 22 LR is seeing your hits ( or misses ) and making corrections. You will be dealing with wind all the time. Just do a lot of shooting. More you shoot, the better you will get.

300 yard 22lr is going to be
1 get the elevation
2 see the shots
3 read the wind
4 read the wind
5 read the wind
etc

Is this 300 only or 0-300 or what?
Is this going to have pits? Have steel and or nice dry dirt for splashes?
Seeing holes at 300 in black paper would be next to impossible/
Very challenging in white

It takes a lot of elevation adjustment to go from 200 to 300 yds. Whatever it takes to get you from 50 to 200 yds. you can double that for a ballpark number. So if you dial up 17 moa to get from 50 to 200 yds. , a rough number for 300 yds. would be 34 moa. This is a guesstimate as there are many variables shooting a .22 at 300 yds.

I was shooting paper. I used SK match ammo, might be better ammo still to find.

It will be 300 only, and using pits, so they will be marked

Hopefully you ordered both front and rear blocks, if so you can probably disregard the rest.

First, do you need more less adjustment, to be able to see over the front sight, or both?

You need to figure out how much elevation you might need, Then how much clearance you might have between the scope and barrel, including making sure that you are not staring at the barrel. You will likely need to raise both bases.

If you have enough elevation now, which is probable, but the sight or muzzle is in the way, raise both mounts the same distance.

If you need more elevation raise the rear.
Less, raise the front.

Keep in mind that an externally adjusted scope, does not track windage or elevation worth spit unless the scope is centered in the adjustment range. The farther off center the pads ride on the radius of the tube, the more left/right movement you will get with an elevation adjustment, or up/down with windage.

The problem this creates is getting the scope high enough to see over the front sight, means you have to raise you head off the stock that much to see down the tube. That may or may not be an issue, but something to consider.

Use a white or buff colored 'backer' behind your target - it will cause your hits to "light up" in the sunlight.

We have shot a lot of .22 long range (for .22).

Ditto on scope elevation. I use a 20 MOA rail. Also use NF ATACR scope from my 338 when we go beyond 300 yards. At 300 it will be like shooting a .308 with a 175 SMK over 1,000 yards. When to shoot and when not to shoot!

This with a subsonic .22 round like CCI SV, Eley or Lapua. All depends what your rifle likes.
