help troubleshooting bolt malfuction

I have a stiller tac 30 action, pierced a primer today. Didnt notice until I loaded the next round, had a light strike, failure to fire and had to hammer on the bolt to get it open. Now the bolt wont cock, obviously damaged something in there. I can turn the bolt shroud with a glove on with some effort, something is definitely up.

Anyone care to venture what might be happening?

Ive never stripped a rem bolt before, are there any special tools that I need to get?

Seems like if its a spring or something along those lines I should just be able to drop one in, but can just as easily drop it by my smith. I JUST got the rifle back today from some other work, so would really love to fix this myself if possible instead of waiting weeks. safety first though, but wanted to post this to see if I can get some advice.

thanks in advance!

A tool like this makes the job of bolt disassembly easy.

If you pierced a primer and now your having trouble with the bolt you might have a small piece of primer inside the bolt. You should try taking the bolt apart and cleaning it some. The back shroud just threads on and off if you or your smith (probably will) have the tool.

Remove the firing pin and clean the bolt and assembly.

ok, I got the bolt apart via this method

couldnt find any bits of brass in there, put it back together and I still cant get it working. I had a new trigger installed, but fired 100 rounds with no problem right before this happened. Might have to bring this by the smith's. grrrr. Weather is getting nice here too.

Pierced a primer today

That may have something to do with the primer cup thickness rather than your action. What cal and cartridge are you using. What primer are you using

Didn’t notice until I loaded the next round, had a light strike, failure to fire and had to hammer on the bolt to get it open.

If it didn’t fire why did you have to hammer the bolt to get it open? :)

20 tac, rem 7.5 primers, have at least 500 of this load through the rifle, anything is possible but doubt its the ammunition.

The firing pin dropped, got a light strike on the primer, the round did not fire and then I could not get the bolt up without a good amount of force. Now the bolt wont cock. Have taken it apart twice now, am not seeing anything out of the ordinary but I dont know what Im looking for so maybe I need to bring this by to my smith. Frustrating.

You may never pierce another primer or it may be the next time you pull the trigger. This is a common problem with high pressure cartidges using small rifle primers. I would suggest turning the firing pin down and bushing the bolt.

That may very well be the case and I do appreciate the advice, but I have a mechanical problem I need to solve or at the very least identify, trying to figure out what is wrong, will worry about how it happened once I have the problem diagnosed...

When you pierce a primer, the firing pin assy. 'backs up' in the bolt body as a result of the high pressure from the primer. This puts an excessive load on the trigger. On three lever triggers (like the Jewell), the sear engagement lever can break as a result. -Al
