Help on a rifle build??

I am going to build a rifle for deer hunting and was wanting yalls opinion on what you would get. I want a flat shooting rifle out to 600 yards.

The calibers I am looking at getting is 7mm Mag...7mmWSM...7mmSAUM.
I plan on building it off of either a Remington action or a Savage action. It will have a custom barrel, not yet decided on it yet. Either a Pacnor, Shilen, Lyija, ect...ect..
And putting a B&C stock or a Stockade or McMillan on it.

What is yall opinion on Caliber, Action, Barrel and Stock?

Thanks for any help. This is my 1st post.

dust22-250,

I like the Savage target action. I am thinking of doing a 284 win, better barrel life, but you may want more speed and power. your stocks sound fine, HS is one to add.

As far as barrels, any of the top makes are good. With the Savage you can buy per- chambered, and can also change barrels and boltfaces to change to any round you want to shoot.

Brux is a barrel that is, not known as well as some, but coming to the top in long lot of long range match.

Good luck with the new gun

I did what you are thinking about,
R. W. Hart & Son did all the work,
Rem 700BDL action, trued,
Hart Barrell, 26"
High Tech Stock,
Luepold 4.5x14 50mm with top turrent knob for elevation
280 ackley rem, using 140 sierra sbt and Nosler 140 Bt it shoots in the .300's at 3150fps with 9 1/2's R/p brass and H4350,
by son has the same setup rifle and his shoots as this one does

Ihave no experience with the Savage action, but with a number of the Rem 700,s and they all do well.
good luck

If I were to build a deer gun from either of the actions you have listed, here is what I would build.

Remington 700 BDL action, trued or blue printed w/Sako Bolt Conversion
Spencer #6 SS 26" barrel
Richards Custom Stock Model #3
Jard 700 H 28oz replacement trigger
Talley one piece base and rings
Leupold VX-7 3.5-14x50mm scope
280AI Caliber with a 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet with 64grs of RL22 for over 3,260 f/sec of deer bashing delight.

Good luck with your build.

For deer and accuracy I'd go with a 6.5 caliber Berger 140 grain bullet. You can get fantastic results with 6.5x284 and R17, or 6.5x47 Lapua if you want better barrel life and more efficient powder use, or 260 Rem. either AI'd or not, or even 6.5 Rem. Mag which is unfairly under rated.

Hunting is what I do.

I would have to agree that a 284 Win, 280 ACK, or a 6.X284 would probably be better, the 284 and 280 wont burn barrels out as fast and you can get mag accuracy with a less powder charge and save the barrel, the 6.5X284 would burn the barrel out a little faster but it is a darn good round for hunting. if you are set on a 7mm mag of sorts, out of your list I would pick the 7MM mag, due to its wide availability of brass and easy store bought ammo if you forget your ammo at home. and resale might be higher to the general public if you decided to sell it down the road
