Help needed on 20 cal for fox and crow?

Have the oppurtunity to get a Rem 700 action rebarreled for crows and fox's. Looked at getting a secondhand 223 or 223AI, but decided on a new barrel rifle, know what has happened to it from day 1).

Torn between calibres now, 20 Tac, 20 Practical or 22BR.

I prefer a magnum sporter weight barrel,do alot of walking varminting - had a VSSF once and hated lugging it around!), would also like a shorter barrel 23" or 24". Which calibre would suit or not sacrifice a mass of velocity for a shorter barrel, not 26").

Also have the oppurtunity of a HS stock from a 700 LTR, like the idea of smaller palm swell etc but am concerned that the shorter length of stock will be a problem, muzzle heavy) for this length barrel. Anyone built a set up using the LTR stock? Or would I be better using the standard HS varmint stock?

NIGHTWALKER.
go with the 20 practical,no arsing about case forming,a 24in bbl will give you 4000fps+ with 32 vmax with a small powder charge.a decent varmint type bbl will give you all you need.as for stock choice, you cant go wrong with HS or the one off the LTR.there is a article in the archives by WARREN B. about his project gun 20 practical.this will give you lots of info,i wish i went 20 practical but went 20tact,same velocity pwd etc just more case forming.old charlie dont like it!
anyways good luck keep us posted.
where are you in the uk,im in leeds.

there is another one almost as easy as the .20 practical
204R/223
get you smith to run there 204R reamer in to 223 case length.
neck down 223 brass and fire form while hunting- you can use a properly shortened 204R die set to match.
gives you all the appearance of a 20 TAC and all the advantages of a 20 TAC but dead easy brass forming, easy to find die sets and easy to find brass.
I'd also suggest you get a 1:11 twist so you can use the 39/40's as well and ensure that they will be stable.
if you are ordering a barrel you get to specify twist so get just that little bit quicker than standard to ensure they are stable and also if you choose to use the 32's it wont be over stable but the extra rotation will help the "blow up" factor on crows etc.

i dont know alot about these guns other than the 204 and the 223. in my opinion either of these are a great varminter rifle without a doubt. but it all depends what varmint you're hunting and how far away the varmint is from you. i have a .223 and the .204 will probably be my next new gun, can't wait). in my opinion the perfect varmint rifle is one that you can do and do well what you set out to do with it. both of these are hellers in my opinion. well thass my report for what it's worth...:thumb:
