Help! Most Expierenced Rem 700 Gunsmith you all know?

Who is the most expierenced Rem700 gunsmiths?
I have some unanswered questions and cant seem to get any answers so I figured I'd ask who has the most expierence with the Rem 700's?
It involves a Rem 700 LA Magnum B.F. action that was originally a 7mmSTW with Detachable Magazine according to Remington.
I'm wanting to rebarrel it with a 300RUM.
Seems there is a problem with the action being cut (removed feed rails)for a DM system(by remington) so that inturn conflicts with the 300RUM chamber.
All replies are Greatly Appreciated.

john beanland, sid goodling, bob green etc.Look them up under the left column on the homepage as gunsmiths. gre-tan rifles too.

Call Karl Kampfeld @ Kampfeld customs he's one of the best on rem 700s

You mean Karl Feldkamp at Kampfeld customs?..... Agree, he is a great fellow and does exceptional work. (And he's a darned good shooter too). You won't be disappointed. WD

I would go with Randy Gregory accuracy unlimited in Wisconsin he is great on all actions custom or factory I would consider the remington short action ultra mag in 7mm or 30 cal burns less powder with almost the same velocity

Yea that's what I had in my mind :o

It's the "Kampfeld Customs" name that screws us up.

Karl is good people. If he doesn't know, he's not afraid to say, but will know where to point you.

I'm lucky enough, for the time being, to live/work close by.

Yea he did say he was moving west I've been after him to build me a 6 dasher
On a 700 for a while but have to wait until he's moved

Bob Brackney is the best on a Rem 700 I have ever seen.
Personally have several of his actions.

I am sure there are many good smiths.

If you can get Mr. Brackney to do one, Use him.

just my 2cents.

To answer your question the feed rails in all Remington's with the DM are removed. You have to use the Rem mag or other after market systems. That will limit your over all cartridge length.

I must have had a brain cramp. The best way to go is a Weatherby 30-378 center feed mag box and follower. It will take a slight bit of work to get it to mate up with a BDL floor plate but that is by far the best approach. One round in the chamber and two in the mag. Feeds like a champ.

What about the Wyatts CFE13 mag box? Is it a 2 rnd. box and does the receiver need altering for it to fit and utilize the BDL f.p.?
I cant get Wyatts to respond to emails or get a good phone#.

+1 for Randy Gregory. I bought a used 6br he built on a 700 action that shot extremely well for me as a 6br and later as a 284 Shehane. I still have another 284 Shehane identical to the 700 except with a Nesika action and it didn't shoot any better than the 700 which surprised me at the time.

Have never heard or read anywhere about "removed material for Rem 700 detachable magazine" action.

Have read about RUM ctgs and larger diameter ctgs requiring action rails narrowed a couple thousandths to reliably feed the ultra mags or bigger ctgs....

Lots of DM model 700s were donor actions. A 7mm STW is essentially a .300 H&H variant which thousands of model 700s have been chambered for over the years.

Perhaps your gunsmith just is confused? Action is okay as it is, but the rails do need to be widened to feed the ultra ctg, but not a big deal.

Your 700 DM should take standard magnum follower and floorplate assy just fine. Got another 700 LA rifle in the gun closet? Try swapping the floorplate assy to your DM rifle to verify for yourself.

On another note, got all your RUM components. Not too easy to find that brass these days. Five years ago, sure... Now, not so easy. I owned a .300rum sendero SF and couple of sendero .338rums 7 or 8 years ago. Like owning a dragster, minimal barrel life and at least 1/3 fewer loadings per can of powder... Lots of fun shooting one that's braked w/o good hearing protection...

The good news is, your gunsmith is likely mistaken. The rest of the good news is your still have time to reconsider your ambitions for the action, or get your order in for several more barrel blanks so your new smith can set you up right. Kind of like shooting a match quality 6.5/284; have to order a new barrel at time you install a new barrel, so your guns not out of action after 600rds... That's just the cost of burning 90+gr of slow powder to gain the extra velocity. About a buck a shot in barreling fees.
