Help me decide on LR Coyote Rifle

I am wanting to have the ultimate 6mm cartridge for long range coyote hunting.

I am going to build it on a encore frame and probably have mgm make the barrel. I have decided to do a 6mm and want to know what is the best choice. I do alot of coyote hunting and am getting really long shots here in Idaho. I want something to shoot the heavy 115 bullets. My major criteria is somewhat perticular. I am looking for something that is flat shooting and super accurate and easy to load for. Accuracy is of the utmost value. I know that you are going to think I am crazy and asking for the moon and the stars but I get shots from 500 to 1k. I know that the odds are slim on a 1k coyote but I at least want 700 yard potential. Options I have considered. 240 Wby, 6mm Remmington Ackley, 6-284. Please give me some opinions. I would be really grateful to hear from some of the pros here.

I just put together another 6-284. 3300+ with 105's without stretching the pockets in two firings. Not a huge barrel burner for your application either. The smaller 6's would love to be this good when they grow up.

My 1st choice would be a 6mmAI, I've shot the 6mmAI a lot and it's honesty a 800yd Prairie dog round. I've managed a few range finder documented kills at that range shooting 87gr Vmax's and the 105 Amax. I'm sure it's capable of 1000 kills but so far I haven't been. But a yote is a lot bigger target but then again you'll most likely only get one shot where we were able to walk in in on the PD's. So many choices so little time, good luck and lets us know you choose.

Well, your first issue is the Encore frame, whole can of worms in how the action locks up and the slop in the hinge pin. You should use a good bolt action of some type, you would possibly avoid a whole sack of Hell.

Match bullet may just zip right through the animal at distances, so be prepared to see that. The 105 A max may be the exception.

I think that Lynn's advice is right on.

Again, I would not use the Encore frame due to inconsistant lock up, forearm issues, and hinge pin issues. I have custom contenders and their problems are not for the weak of heart.

Good luck!

I agree with 'mtetm', 6mmAI throated for 105 AMax. I have just had one made up for 1000 yd F Class - McLennon barrel, 30 inch, lead lapped, stainless, throated for 107 SMKs. The 105 AMax has a very thin jacket which deforms when seated on a compressed load of powder so one would assume that it would fragment inside a critter.

A very important consideration in choosing the cartridge is barrel life. An F Class buddy of mine had one made up in 6-284 and said that the first 12 inches of rifling was gone after 500 shots. Don`t know how much he was exaggerating but that is what he told me and it was a factor in my choosing the 6mmAI.

Motivate, I am not a long range expert, but am learning more every day. I DO know about coyote hunting as I am blessed with a job that lets me do that for a living. I use a .243AI with a nightforce scope. I shoot the 115 dtacs at 3050 fps. A good trigger is a must here for long range hunting situations. I took a 744 yard coyote last fall with a witness. The 115 will do fine on antelope at long range also. This is fun stuff. The 1000 yard coyote is also my goal. Have a friend here that did it. Good luck.

This may or may not fit your application, but it'd be a heckuva long range 6mm to pop a coyote with.

I am also working on a long range coyote gun. Shilen 28' barrel in .243 AI on a Savage Target action. I plan to shoot the 107 SMK or 95 SMK. Either way, practice and knowing the gun is going to be the best way to get a long range kill.

Two shots might be possible, but the first is going to be the most important.

A straight-forward .243 Winchester with 90 grain Nosler E-Tips with a proper charge of Hodgdon H4350 powder would well do the trick: Accurate and Deadly, so what more is required? Obviously, lead is being phased out of our ammo supply more swiftly than most realize, so work with what's available. What's actually available? NOT MUCH currently. The primer shortage is a sad joke, but not because manufacturers cannot comply with demand. More sinister forces are at work here! Reloading without primers is difficult to impossible, and herein lies the tale: is this a governmental shortage? America supplies the entire world with weapons and ammo, so why the SHORTAGE of American Civilian 'shortages?' PRIMERS are essential to handloaders, and they are cheap and easy to produce, yet try to find some! A conspiracy against AMERICAN civilians? I vote yes! cliffy
