Help me build a varminter out of an old Model 70 pushfeed with magnum bolt face

I know you said you wanted to be 6.5 or under but, a 17 twist 300wsm shooting 110vmax would make a pretty slick varmint gun!

If you're open to single feeding the action. I'd do a 243 WSSM, 8 twist, it should crank the 105's unless you want to do it in 7 twist and crank 115's. The brass is fine now, I turn 3 thousands off the necks and anneal and have had no issues. Make sure you do some extra freebore if you're going with 115's. Ballistics are about the same as 6MM Remington.

I know gunsmiths that have bushed bolt faces from magnum to .308 or .308 to .223. It can be done, and it is reversible if I recall. Just a thought...

I built a 264 Win Mag on a Pre 64 "264 Westerner" went with a Muller Works #5 Sporter Fluted, 26"FL, 1:8, 3 groove. It shoots Barnes 120 Tipped XXX at 3475fps with IMR 7828. Great for coyotes, wolf, deer, antelope. Expected barrel life is 900-1000 rounds and it currently shoots 5 shot 100 yd groups in the .3s'

Another option is getting another bolt from PT&G and change the mag box, follower, and spring.

Thanks for all of the ideas! I think I am leaning toward the 6.5 SAUM. My smith can do a magazine modification to make it feed.

New to this forum, but would like to suggest the new 6.5mm Nosler. It appears to be an easy feed and is reportedly accurate and fast.

BTW... I really enjoy this forum.

6mm saum. Barrel life won't be very nice but, it's got to be fun. that's what I would do.

A push feed bolt just sold on gunbroker, it was a, .473 bolt face.
