Help me build a varminter out of an old Model 70 pushfeed with magnum bolt face

I've got this old receiver that I had initially considered rebarreling to a 7mm Mag. However, I'd rather rebarrel it to something that would get shot more frequently.

Replacement parts for these things are very tough to come by so I've been looking at the WSSM cartridges. I am almost certain I'd never get one to feed, but shooting it as a single shot wouldn't break my heart.

Open to all ideas....

Thanks!

According to SAAMI the 7MM Rem Mag and the 223 WSSM utilize the same bolt face, but then I'm not an expert. The standard magnum bolt face, .532-.535. Everyone, that I know, that has tinkered with the WSSM line of cartridges has experienced very poor quality brass issues.

You are right - it is a rebated rim - the body is larger...

6.5 SAUM or Rem Mag with a 9 twist would be good up to a 120 with several 85-100 grain options for high speed.

OP,,,I would sell the whole gun (acton-bbl-stock) and put the money towards something more to your liking,,Roger

I should mention that the rifle has a fair amount of sentimental value so it won't be going anywhere. Also, I'd like to keep it at 6.5mm or less to help mitigate recoil. I will only have about a #5 barrel contour.

Thanks for the discussion so far....

Might be worth calling Dave Kiff at PTG and see if he'll make a bolt for you.

My 7mm RSAUM pushes the 120 gr. V-Max to 3600 fps plus from it's 28" tube using RL17. Ill post terminal ballistics this year but I'm sure it will require a disclaimer. ;D

Pre-USRA, Winchester did chamber the post-64 push feed long action M70 in 222. Those bolts are scarce but out there. It took me two years to find one. Found it on this site. Would be a single shot unless you got lucky and also found the magazine parts.

It will cost you, But you may be able to ship it without the bolt back to Winchester and ask for a new .22-250 barrel and bolt to match...if that is the bolt face you are looking for...burn out that barrel in a summer, and rebarrel the next year...

After Winchester closed operations a couple years back (before they started making Model 70s again) I needed a LH .473 bolt to complete a switch barrel 300WM / 6x47 Lapua. The only way I could get the bolt was to send a rifle without a bolt...to be fit. It cost me too much money, but I got my bolt...and I never pursued the switch barrel!
