thanks, how well do these things work compared to the new ones from sinclair?

You are better off getting something new, where it has all the pieces, and teck suport. With that said its only a consintricity gauge, the case/loaded round spins and a dial indicator tells you the run out.(Simple tool) I am sure it works just as good as the new stuff, but if it needs any parts, you will have a hard time getting them. Just remember you get what you pay for.

Does this sine some light on it?

I own one (and several others). The problem with supporting the body of a case along its entire length, with a continuous V block is that short cases tend to rock as you spin them. Obviously, this makes getting a reliable reading more difficult. Also, the amount of friction between the case and its support is greater than the current design. For every thing but straightening loaded ammo the current Sinclair design is very good. For straightening (if you want to try this approach) and measuring loaded ammo, the H&H gauge is IMO the best.
