Help identifying rifle

A good friend of mine is asking for some assistance with identifying a bolt action rifle; these are the photos he shared with me. I asked if there was any markings on this and he said the barrel and action are unmarked.

I'm thinking maybe stevens or savage. Any leads or details would be greatly appreciated.

You got it right.

It looks like a Savage Model 340. They were made in several calibers, 22 Hornet, 222 Rem and I believe 30-30 Win. Back in the day they were the poor man's varmint rifle.

Old Savage. I worked on one a couple months ago. I agree with Bill on the 340 designation. My memory isn’t as sharp, tho. The one I worked on was chambered in 225 Winchester.

A 340, had one of the first ones in .222 in the ‘60’s.
Shot well above it’s pay grade, barrel was bedded with floating action to save $
Think my old man paid $69 for me.

Wow! Never thought I'd have all this feedback so quickly - thank you very much for the help. It was part of my friend's late uncle's collection.

I had one in .222. Sold it and regretted it. It out shot a local PD's 2 Rem 700's in .223.

340 savage. Have one in .225 Winchester.

There are several different versions of these, the 30-30 is probably the most common.
These were also marketed under their own model numbers by Montgomery Wards, Sears, Western Auto, etc.

Yep… Savage 340 or some valentines of it. Still have mine. It’s very old as it does not have accommodations for a side mount scope. Hang on to that magazine, they aren’t cheap!
