Help: Identify and appraise remington 700 match rifle

I received this rifle in a trade and I don't know much about it and have yet to shoot it. I believe it was used in Palma matches or some sort of prone rapid fire match but i'm unsure. I maybe selling it but i'm really unsure how much a rifle like this would be worth with these modifications. What do you all think it was used for and what it's worth? It's a 223 rem BTW.

At first glance I thought it might be a 540X but closer inspection of the images spoiled that theory. It looks like a 700 action ......
These guys might be able to provide more help than you'll find here:

Take the rear site off and see if there is a model number like 700 or 40x.

What you have is an across the course rifle. It is used for NRA Hightower matches. As far as value, that depends on the barrel brand, twist rate, and round count. If that thing has a slow twist rate it's not very useful for high power as it won't shoot heavy bullets. This rifle is pretty old school. Red field front and rear sights and a bloop tube (designed to give you a longer sight radius). Stock looks like the old 40x txt stock. My guess is that someone built this thing up from a 700 action or donor rifle. The rifle will have a limited area of interest in its current configuration.

PM me if you have any more questions.

Like was stated earlier, that's a 700 built up as an accross the course gun. I have a 40x with the same stock and red field sights in 308. It's accurate , but I don't care for firing bolt guns in highpower . I do use it for midrange prone matches though. I actually prefer that type of stock for prone as opposed to the normal flat bottom prone stocks. Mine also has unertl scope blocks on it so evety now and then I Slap my 24x on it for 300 yd f class matches .
Most people shooting bolt guns in xtc now use a tube gun stock
I plan on updating mine with an adjustable butt, cheek piece. , and ladder type front sight.

You have a "B" prefix serial numbered 700 from the 80's in a birch 40XR stock.
The OEM Rem Bbl code stamping(L D = Feb/ 1983)relegates it to a 1:12" or 1:14" twist Bbl to push 55 gr bullets-maximum.
The front sight is a Mid Tompkins & as stated previously, a Redfield International rear sight w/ Merit disc/apature.
The rear bridge "slotted base" is cut for stripper clips.

Value is $600-$700....... to the right person.

Well I initially posted this in 'the other forum' you listed it so deleted it and copy/paste it here. Most of what has already been said.

Looks to be a 700 BDL Varmint Special barreled receiver with 24" barrel. Barrel date code 'L' for February and 'D' for 1983 would be right for the B prefix before serial number. Has a bloop tube to extend site radius on barrel. International rear sight. Stock I am guessing is Remington off a 40-XR/XTC type. Has the adaptor on rear bridge to load via stripper clips. As for round count or accuracy potential one would have to shoot it. Might be competitive and then again maybe not! Usually parts guns have a somewhat limited value as you need to find a buyer wanting exactly that combo. Probably more money in selling International rear sight separate, stock separate and barreled receiver???? Just my .02 cents worth though.

...and Dan in the meantime typed most of what I was doing.lol

Thanks for the info guys! I might throw a scope on it to see out it shoots as I'm not a good enough with aperture sight to test it. Unfortunately it came from a gun shop to it's past is unknown, only that it came from a large collection and wasn't sold individually.

Keep the info coming if anyone has anything to add I appreciate it!

Yeah, you could get your 700$ out if it, 150$ for the rear sight, $50-$100 for the front , at least 400 for the action and about $100-$200 for the stock.

Well I shot it today with my father on his property. Unfortunately we only had some winchester 223 45gr hp factory ammo to shoot and about 50yds, but I must say i'm impressed. With my limited experience with an aperture sight I was able to shoot .43 and .55 3 shot groups and a .78 5 shot group(4 were .52) at 50yds. I'm sure it would do better with handloads and someone experienced with this type of sight. It also functioned perfectly although I didn't get to shoot it much. Although it's a neat rifle I think I'll be putting it up for sale soon as it would just end up gathering dust.. Thanks guys
