Goofy,
My 10/22 had been laying in the gunsafe for 15 years or so. I took it to my gunsmith buddy, who had a new take off Anschutz barrel from a customer's benchrest rifle. He threaded my Ruger receiver, cut the threads off the Anschutz barrel, re-threaded it, and did a new match chamber.
I put it in a Boyd's laminated stock and then bedded the action. Butch also had a used Hoehn tuner in his shop that I had him put on, just for Cool Points. I tried some of my old lot Lapua Midas and Multi-Match ammo and some Wolf Match Target at 25 yards. Much to my surprise the $1.85 Wolf whooped the snot out of my $10 Lapua. My intended use for the rifle is only as a squirrel gun, so a 25 yard zero is just fine.
Anyway, I tossed this out there just as another consideration for you. If you have a used Ruger 10/22 action or can get your hands on one for short money, the cost of threading the action is very minimal.
Best of luck,
