Help getting into F Class

Was wondering if anyone here was from the northern part of Virginia Fauquier or Culpeper area that could help me find some F T/RClass matches to watch and maybe shoot in. I’m working on a 308. Just have lots of questions and where are some matches. Trying to get ready for the new year and getting started. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe you should post your question.

Many here could possibly help.

I live an hour from you in Montgomery county MD. Would be happy to help . Let’s get you hooked up with the bridgeville crew as Koko said. @Iggyort is also plenty knowledgeable and at one time mentored me a ton getting more into the sport. Good luck

Craig,

Like Kokopuff said before, Bridgeville isn't really that far away from you and we love to help new shooters get started.

March 27th is our first Mid-Range practice and a Demonstration/Clinic - EVERYONE is welcome. You DO NOT have to be a member.

The next day, March 28th is our first 3x600 match of the season - Come to the clinic on Saturday and then stay over and shoot your first match on Sunday. I can guarantee you will have a good time and that you will get all the help you ever wanted .

For more info PM either Kokopuff or me.

John

Thanks I might try to get up there. But it’s about 5 hours from me. Some of the questions is where can I get a copy of what the different classes are. Is it just 2 classes. F open and f t/r? And what are the differences. I just see weight, front rest and for the t/r class you can only use 2 calibers 233 or 308? Is there another class I’m missing?

Go to Chapter 22 of the NRA High Power Rifle Rule Book - F-Class Rules begin on page 68, I think.

This is the best hand up you'll ever receive. Read the rule book and if you have questions, fire away. Welcome to F Class!

Thanks for putting this up John, it will make me read the rules again. Something every shooter should do every year.

Best advice i can give is the following.

People i met were very welcoming, and willing to help.
Don't be afraid to ask a question if your not sure on something!
The only stupid question is the one not asked.
Dress for the weather. It may be cold in the morning, but heat up in the afternoon. Layers.
Bring something to drink. Thermos of tea if it's cold. Water/Gatorade when it warms up.
If you don't have a mat, an old shipping blanket works.
Chamber flag. If you don't already have one, get one if there's time. If not there is usually someone there that has an extra.
Deep calming breaths. Relax.
Have fun & go into it as the learning experience it should be.

Oh, and asprin.
If your not used to shooting that much, especially prone, you'll want some for your shoulder afterwards. Lol

Pic of my first time.
Stevens 200 in 7mm-08AI with factory 22" sporter barrel.
I still get ribbed about the U-Haul blanket. Lol

Thanks I have one of them blankets to. Lol.

Double down on all the great advice already given.

I remember being so nervous before my first match, I even went to observe a match first. What a waste of anxiety, nobody expects the newbie to do anything except learn and enjoy themselves.

Go shoot in matches, be a sponge, shooters love to talk about guns, shooting and reloading.

Hi,
Great thread. I am in the same boat. I would like to get into fclass shooting too. I have a 308, 6.5x47 and 6 dasher. All of these rifles are prs style rifles. I have shot all of these rifles out to 1000 yds and know my dope. Of course, I was shooting at steel and not a target. I know that I would have to take off the muzzle breaks. I am going to order a single round loading block. Is if permissible to shoot these rifles while I wait on my fclass rifle build? I live in Montgomery County Maryland.
Thanks,

Probably....

Take a look at the rules (posted earlier in this thread), but essentially, the .308 is probably going to be OK for F-T/R, shot with a bipod - weight, including bipod, scope, etc. cannot exceed 18.18 lbs.

The 6.5x47 and 6 Dasher cannot be used in F-T/R, but can be used in F-Open. You can shoot Open with a bipod, but most use a front rest. The max weight for an Open rifle is 10 Kg (approx. 22 lbs.). The 6 Dashers are known for eating up Mid-Range matches and low-wind Long Range. Your 6x47 should work for both, no problem - but yes, please take that muzzle brake off.

Sounds like you have plenty of experience, but like you said, shooting at an F-Class target is much different than shooting steel, but you will be OK, I'm sure - you already have the basics and you already have competitive experience. Do your best putting a kit together and then come to a match - you'll get all the help you need.

It's about a two hour drive from where you are in Maryland and Bridgeville - depending on traffic and exactly where you are in Montgomery County, of course. Come on over in March for either our clinic or our season opener 3x600, or both.

PM me if you need more information.

Hope to see you in Bridgeville.

John

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I will work on getting things together. I downloaded the rules and will read them. My plan is to come to the clinic and shoot the season opener. I have an older bald eagle rest. I don't have a rear bag like the ones I have seen used. I will see you in March.
D.K.
