Help Deciding on Cartridge for Savage 110 Precision Build

Have a donor action from a model 110 in 7mm Rem Mag. Small Shank thread size so no WSM or RUM cartridges, unfortunately.

Preference would be something with a ~.540" bolt face so I can leave the bolt head unchanged. Not a show-stopper.

.30-cal would be nice as I have lots of match-type .308" bullets to shoot up. Also not a show-stopper.

Some other notional criteria:
- Max 28" barrel
- Min MV 3,000 fps
- Min G1 BC 0.600
- Max free recoil energy 22 ft-lb w/14 lb rifle
- No muzzle brake
- Wildcats OK (I reload)

Changing the bolt head takes about 2 minutes, so I'd look a 260, 6.5x284 or a straight 284. If you want to stick with the 30s a 30-375 Ruger could be fun.

Yep, I just learned the small shank is not an issue for WSM and RUM chamberings.

Want to stay with either a long action or short mag-style cartridge. The 30-375 Ruger is an interesting concept. Will look into, thanks.

I just had a 7 RSAUM built on a 110 action. My gun weighs 18.5 lbs and the recoil is very manageable and don't look back. Love it. Contact Sailertoo on this site. He does fantastic work.

+1 on the 30-375 Ruger. Judging by case capacity, that should get you .300 Weatherby class ballistics without the freebore issues. Combine that with the heavier, high bc bullets and higher performance powders now available, I think you would have a very potent combination.

I have always been one with the idea of if it works don't try to fix it. The plain old 300 Winchester Mag has work for years. ;D
