help? charge load for 308 190gr SMK

can someone be a kind soul and peek in their reloading book for a minimum/maximum load for 308 using Varget and 190 SMKs???

According to Sierra using a Savage 12 VSS 26" barrel 1/10 twist federal case
and 210M primer.

Varget
35.4 = 2200 FPS
37.4 = 2300 FPS
39.4 = 2400 FPS
41.4 = 2500 FPS
The FPS will vary in your rifle to some extent. Start low and work up.

Try 42.5 g. Varget as an initial max. Two grains less to start. ONe really should not be reloading without a manual. The LoadBook series is invaluable as every published load they can find is in there very economically.

If you can type a reply or start a new topic on this site, you canfind load data on Powder manufacturers sites.

I have found many different loads but some are hard to find with the specific powders I am using.

If you can afford to load and buy a rifle,why not invest pennys into something that could save your life as alot of posters post hot loads over the max in any book.Just sayin.

Geeze!!! welcome to the forum comforttechinc, you do need a manual for reloading but sorry you never got a warm reception. I don't have a manual in front of me but I shot 42 grains of Varget and the 190's in my vtr and it did quite well for a factory rifle at 1K yards, my son shot it in the 11 lb class and 10 shots went into a little under 10", not bad for a short barreled factory rifle with a goofing looking barrel,...best of luck to you.
Wayne.

Really? It's easy to find at Hodgdon's site. 308 Win, Varget, 190gr bullet: Start: 41.0, max: 44.0C. Max velocity is 2536 @ 49,100 CUP.

so far in this post I have seen loads as low as 35.4 and as high as 44.0 and I do realize the accuracy load is pretty much never the max load

I think I am about done with this forum!! we cant's comment on this we cant comment on that, we get in trouble if we say this, and now a man can't ask a simple reloading question without being chastised, my God!!! I am so sorry you asked such a stupid question on a Gun forum comforttechinc, granted it is easy info to get on the web or out of a book but I don't understand why we can't be nice about it!!!

I am really new at reloading.. Maybe I forgot to mention that!! I have only been doing it for about a month now

Your fine we all started at some point, we weren't born knowing it all!! you really do need to get a couple different reloading manuals to reference from, there's a lot of info on the web, and this site has a lot of info you search through the search button at the top of the page, I am happy to see you get into the sport and want to encourage you to continue, without new blood the sport will quickly die off, also I want to welcome you to the forum and to the wonderful world of shooting and reloading, it is a lot of fun, this forum is full of great people with a lot of knowledge but we all seem a little testy lately, continue to learn and ask, it's way better to ask then do something wrong and get hurt or worse,...take care.

Thanks Wayne, that's why I left snipers hide there are some REAL A-holes over there. I would ask a question and get reamed for no reason.
Here is much better, trust me.

Welcome, and we have some great people here! I guess we are all "normal" in our own way!

Anyway, I love my 308's.

42.5 Varget with the smk 190's .002 touching the lands get me around 2,700fps and is safe in my gun. Very accurate @ 600yds as well.

I have heard of people going higher, but do so with caution if you need to.

42.5 is not showing any pressure signs in my rifle, it could in yours.

Maybe start at 42.0 and work up, inspect brass and primers carefully.

Dennis

PS: I state the above as I pulled the powder out of a factory Federal round. There was 42.5 of something in their factory bullet.

What barrel length and COAL are you running on your gun? Thanks, Matt

Wayne.

Well said Wayne and we need to encourage and help new shooters and reloaders

I am running a VERY heavy 20" 5R bull barrel 1-10 twist. The barrel has almost no taper from 1.25" to the end.

Well that is awfully short but to get those big boys up to speed but I shot my vtr to 1K and I think it is maybe only 20" or 22"so you should be fine.

I've done quite a bit of .308 loading and I can tell you one thing to always keep in mind, is the brand of brass your using. Winchester brass has more powder capacity than other brands so you usually end up with a higher charge weight using Winchester. For example I have a recipe of 45.5 grains of Varget with a 168 SMK in a Winchester case that shoots really well with no pressure signs. If I were to use that 45.5 grains in a Federal case I would have major pressure, not alone a massively compressed load. I wish folks would always list the brass there using when listing a .308 load that they use.

Now that was a polite simple question. Some answered it politely and some climbed up on their soap box. I know everyone here had a mother that told them: If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all. A little of that would be refreshing on this forum. Later! Frank
