Help! Black spots on custom action bolt?

I've noticed these black spots keep appearing on the bolt. No matter what I do, I can't remove them. I always leave the bolt oiled, and they don't look like rust spots, but what are they? Could they be spots of cerokote that rubbed off action receiver? Pitting? (doesn't seem to look like pitting) It seems to be getting worse.

That does look like pitting , rust . Are you keeping it air conditioned then letting it sweat while driving to the range ? Down here in S Florida , a rifle will sweat very fast with the high humidity .

Great, this is what I was afraid of. Yes, I did notice one day it had sweat, but I thought I got rid of the moisture and protected the bolt with oil.

How do I get rid of these spots safely? Is this something that has to go back to my smith?

Try some 4x steel wool with oil on it and rub it out. They won't hurt anything.
Just do some pm and all will be fine.

I tried the penetrating oil and lightly rubbed 0000 steel wool but no luck. Spots are still there. If the spots cant be removed, could the bolt be fully cerokoted to permanently protect the metal, or is that not recommended? this is a Pierce action.

I have a cerakoted bolt on my Surgeon. Not as tight as a target action though. I wonder if you didn't get something on the bolt that is not solvent soluble, and attracts moisture? I might be tempted to wash it in hot soapy water, dry it well, then recoat it with oil. Maybe with a wax. Out here in the west it is hard to imagine your moisture issues.

Call Pierce and talk to him.I think ceracoating the entire bolt would be advantageous. If OOOO steel wool/oil does not clean it then I must assume it is pitting. Perhaps they can be polished out. In lieu of ceracoat waxing with auto paste wax a few times would at least keep the moisture from the metal.

I saw something similar quite a few years ago. This may or may not fit in your case.
A friend had a new Perazzi MX-8 setting in an open gun case in the trunk of his car. His wife got a Coke out of the cooler (also in the trunk) and opened it. The usual spray came out of the Coke and got on the barrels without anyone noticing. They closed everything up and went home. When they got home and opened the guncase, the bluing was being eaten off the barrels and pittting had already started. It was a mess.
Think back if you or someone may have opened a Coke or similar drink around your rifle or bolt on the cleaning table.

The Perazzi had been awarded to a US shooter for winning an Olympic Bronze Medal in Olympic Trap.
