Help! 6BR Lapua brass -- Ejection Issues in Savage

I noticed my Lapua 6BR brass is looking pretty rough. It’s not new by any means, probably about 8 firings or so, but I noticed they are getting bad looking nicks on the neck/shoulders, and the case rims have a bunch of nicks too.

Also, almost all of this particular lot of 8x fired brass just stopped ejecting out of my gun. They fall off the bolt as they are pulled out of the chamber. The newer lots of brass I have seem to eject fine. It that a common thing for older brass?

Most likely, I will throw all of these away, I guess I was just expecting more longevity from Lapua brass. Any ideas on why they’re getting so beat up?

Wow! Thanks for the help guys. I didn’t really think the extractor/ejector kit would be causing the issue. I thought there might something wrong with my dies or something.

I replaced all of them- springs, extractor/larger detent ball, etc. Would it make sense that after the brass is fired a few times with the ‘improved’ kit it is tweaked just enough to where it doesn’t eject? My 2-3x fired brass ejects almost 100% of the time.

I never had much luck with the improved extractor...make sure the ball measures .139-.140 under the extractor, put the original Savage extractor in the bolt head or a new factory one(Midway has them)...you might also need to remove the ejector and install a new spring or stretch the original spring a bit to give it some more pressure to launch the case out. It might take a bit of tuning but I've been able to make all of my Savages eject perfectly

Another problem is that the 6BR case is really short and doesn't really get snappy ejection because of it.

If your shooting is mainly off the bench, mild ejection is a good thing. In a hunting situation, it can cause problems

Extract it slowly and look at where the neck is, just before it clears the port.
It drags it right down the bolt lug race way of the action, about guarantee that is what the cause of nicks and gouges on your brass.
Majority of modifications are geared towards standard length cartridges. Stiffer longer spring will make it go from bad to worse.

Everything I own that uses Lapua brass either doesn't have a ejector or I have removed it, hate to see the necks get beat up and I don't like losing it.

Here are a couple of pictures showing this older brass coming out. It starts out on a steep angle (and I now think that’s probably where the neck/shoulder is getting nicked) and then falls off as the bolt comes back.

I had @Grimstod work over the bolt of my Savage based 6BRA including bushing the firing pin and removing ejector and plugging the hole. It’s the best money that I‘ve spent on a Savage except maybe a shouldered Bartlein barrel.

Post #8 of this thread shows a simple mod for your ejector pin for 6BR cases. I successfully modded 2 Savages using this trick. Both now have a 99% ejection rate
