Wasn't sure where to post an intro thread so here it is. I am a passionate shooter and gun collector. I collect mostly older, early automatic rifles from the 1930's on. Right now I've only got a SVT40, SAFN 49 in 7x57, and a PTR 91 (I know, it's not an original HK but I had to make do). I've sold the SVT and am selling the SAFN to pay for my F-open rifle. Politically I'm a bit left of center but don't fit neatly into any category. I am/was a professional M16/M4 armorer at Daniel Defense and left to pursue college full time while I'm still young.


I came here for some advice as I am starting to build a F open rifle and wanted to search around and ask for help and opinions. I started shooting F/TR with a custom AR15 I had made by Daniel Defense while I worked there and am now wanting to move on to a dedicated bolt rifle. I look forward to lurking

Welcome. What caliber are you thinking of for your F open rig?

I'm thinking of the .284 win. I've also given thought of doing the .223 again or one of the may .30s or 6.5s.

I'm not sure of the yardage you are shooting at? The bigger cartridges stop being fun for me after the first couple groups.
I had a 6.5-284 and a .308 re barreled both of them into 6br I don't have the opportunity to shoot past 500 yds. So the 6br is ideal for me

My local range is 1200 yards so I can shoot all the long stuff. I think a .284 in a 22# rifle will be pretty light on recoil, or at least I am hoping.

Welcome, There are many choices. I shoot a 284, it works. and I have have 308 and a 260 they both work
equally as well. My local range is also 1200yds. I figure you live near me. If you would like to shoot with me and shoot one of mine let me know. you can pm me.

I would highly recommend the 7mm RSAUM. I started shooting one 2 years ago and have never looked back. One of my guns is for sale in the marketplace. Check it out. I do my own custom stocks and barrel work.

I'm not looking to buy a rifle outright. I've got enough machining and wood working experience to build my own. I'll look at the 7mm RSAUM though. Haven't considered it but I also haven't been looking into magnums a whole lot.
