Hello, new member from Pittsburgh, PA ...

Hi, a little background .... I'm Pittsburgh Pappy/ Allan, and have circled back to centerfire rifle and pistol shooting. I have been "obsessed" with air rifles for the last 8 years (I see you laughing) :) in .177 and .22 calibers. My main discipline is bench rest shooting, and I took this about as far as one can in the airgun world. I had over $4k in my PCP rifle, scope and air tank .... and another $2k easily in incidentals. I sold off my air rifle stuff, and just now started purchasing some "real" stuff. I picked up a Kimber Micro 9 with Crimson Trace laser sites 9mm this week, and my Tikka T3x .223 will be in tomorrow .... however .... I'm out of town for work until Thursday or Friday. I know, you say why .223? I know the really serious BR shooters are using 6mm, but I wanted to get my feet wet with .223 .... less expensive to shoot, but accurate enough to keep my obsession going. I can always move up to 6mm later, and get into reloading if I find that reloading really has a considerable "means to an end". I'm picking up a bunch of different gr match ammo tomorrow so I can find the "magic" factory load, for now. I'll shoot and chrony at 100 yards to begin. Airgunning and centerfire have many similarities, more than you might think, and the transition, shooting skill-wise, should be a somewhat rapid learning curve. Without writing a novel here, I'll finish by saying that the two main differences between these "hobbies" is the cost of the ammo, and the yardage that I can go out and touch some paper with. Also, with an air rifle, I could step outside and shoot out to 100 yards, at my back yard range, in my PJ's ...... so far, in Pittsburgh, PA ..... I have to actually drive to a range 30+ minutes away, or join a club the same distance away. Would love to join a club, but the close ones that go out to at least 100 yards, are full or have lengthy waiting lists. All for now .....

Welcome to the forums. A friend of mine just bought one of those high tech air rifles and told me that he paid $$$$ for it. Holy smokes, I didn't realize that game could be that expensive. Good luck on your re-entering the CF disciplines. Agree the .223 is a good start. There's plenty of good match ammo available for that cartridge.

Welcome to the rabbit hole! If you stay for any length of time, you'll own all sorts of reloading tools and associated shooting gadgets that you never knew you wanted or needed!

I live just east of Pittsburgh.

Wait a minute!! I hope you aren't coming here and plan on saving money!!?? Welcome, don't forget to try and donate some $'s to the site. If you desire, you will learn a lot on this forum.

Welcome! I’m just south west of Pittsburgh in Bridgeville. Ironically I’ve been thinking about dabbling into the airgun world just so that I can do some back yard shooting.

Welcome......Saxonburg here. Lots of great comp. in this area. Take a look to McDonald Sportsmans Club for a place to join. Not sure if the reg, is filled up but the range is 1st class and so are the people, You can get out to 600 there and they have regular comps out to 500.

Best Regards
Rick

Mcdonald Sportsman club has had its membership closed for the past 4-5 years and I doubt they will ever open the charter again.

Thank you all for the warm welcome, and the club advice. There sure are a lot more powder burners in my area, than there are airgun enthusiasts. Looking forward to ramping up my learning curve, looks like a great forum for future advice.

Thanks again;

I used to shoot airguns. I still have my Daisy!:rolleyes::rolleyes: Good luck with the club search. You have to get on the list and keep trying. Find a member (new best friend) and go as a guest. I like shooting my 223s. My second go around with them. I shot them a lot, early on. I learned from that and moved on into the br cartridges, then came back to them with better shooting skills and equipment. I have learned many good reloading tricks here and used those tricks on my 223s. Now they shoot great. Don't feel like an oddball by starting there. Lots of guys do. You also divulged that you don't mind spending money on your hobby. That's good!:D You will!;) Nice snag, getting a Tikka. They're my favorite factory guns. I've put custom barrels on a few and they just shoot better. Welcome to the forum!

Welcome, down in the Va mnts here.We shoot traditional 3D archery up your way several times a year.Sawmill ski resort, and Denton Hill....beautiful country!!

Love my 223's.....though I probably shoot an old beater 22-250 more.

Extremely deep knowledge base on this site.Be careful on the for sale sections, some great deals and a very standup group of buyers/sellers.....but it can get $$,haha.

Again ... thank you all for a warm welcome, advice and anecdotes. I didn't come back to CF to save money, that's for sure .... and when needed, upgrades and mods are not an issue. Heck ... I would drop $$$ just to add some "bling" to my rifles. :)

So far, great sight .... passing Cabela's on way to Cinci today ... there go some more bucks for shooting accessories and fly-fishing stuff. :)

Go Steelers!

Not unlike this "obsession", you can drop $5k on a custom bench rest air rifle .... in a heartbeat. Michael Thomas out in CA builds them, Thomas Air Rifles, the entire US Air Rifle Benchrest Team use them, and shoot a lot of perfect scores 250/250 .... 25 X's.
