Heavy bullets in 223 Savage

I need recomendations for the 69 grain Sierra in this rifle. I have Tac, H-335, BLC-2, H-322 and other powders available. I am also seating my bullets at 2.330. I appreciate any info you guys might have pleas include OAL and group size you are achieving. I am thinking that these bullets want to be pushed faster for top accuracy.

Also, will the the 75 grain Hornady or the 77 Sierra stabilize in this rifle? If you have good loads for either of these please elaborate.

What's the twist rate ?

I best guess is that the twist will be 1:9. If so try 24.5 grains of H4895 with the 69 grain MatchKing. OAL is determined by your barrel not mine, so my OAL would not necessarily work in yours. I am seating mine .010' short of the rifling.

This load is working well in both my Savage 1:9 twist 10 FP and my Krieger barreled AR-15 with a 1:7 twist barrel,bullets seated for this rifle at max magazine length - 2.260' OAL).

I am sorry, the twist rate is 1 in 9. I am kind of hoping that guys that own these would reply and they would know that. It was very late when I posted and I just forgot.

Travelor, thanks very much for the suggestion. I only mentioned my OAL because, with it it pushed so far out to get near the lands, it increses case capacity a noticeable amount. I do have H-4895 but it has never metered very well for me, the same for varget, so I would like to stick with my ball powders for now. Also, have you tried heavier bullets, like the ones mentioned, in your rifles?

I have had marginal luck getting the 75gr amax's to shoot with varget,I have not tried other powders as my options for >200yd shooting is limited and the 75's don't offer me anything the 69's do). They will go into a 0.3 and then turn around and give me a 0.75. The 69gr sierras are a consistent 0.5MOA to 550yds, and when the wind is right and I am paying attention it will go lower at 300yds or less.
I have also heard very good things about W748 and am planning on giving it a try.
77gr sierras also shot OK in my gun, but nothing like the 69's.

cz223, i have savage 10fp, 24', in 223 rem. my scope is tasco varmint & target true mil-dot 6x24. my recipe, which my savage loves, is LC brass, Fed 205M, 69 SMK, W748 with 25.1gr, & coal @ 2.26' will shoot in the 2's to 4's. avg vel is 2875. goes sub at 825yds. haven't shot beyond 700m.
i have an another works great is Hornady 75 Amax! yes 75 Amax.
hornady box says required twist is 1-8'; however, my savage is 1-9', and works great and loving it! sounds like a commercial.
R-P brass, Fed 205M, IMR 4064 24.0gr,kind of compressed load), and coal @ 2.407' with avg vel of 2765. it'll not go sub till pass 1000 yds. i've shot this and smallest group i've ever had was .25' @ 100yds and hit the iron maiden at 575yds, according to my calculation. try a box in yours...

I havnt seen anyone post the AA2520 load yet.

I have a prarie dog rifle that has been pressed into a FTR gun for the my teenage kid.

My PD load is 25gr 2520,ball powder) and a 75gr Amax on LC cases or winchester cases and winchester primers

2520 meters like water and works great for large vlolume loading. Hornady 75 Amax are fairly inexpensive compared to the Sierra/ Berger bulllets in the same offering

Give that one a try.

I have a CZ527 in .223 with a 26-inch McGowen barrel. Try using your TAC at 23.5, 24.0 and 24.5 behind your 69ers. Use CCI primers if your shooting in the heat. Nice accuracy.

I have had good success with RL15 with 69gr Sierras 25gr Lapua cases CCI benchrest primers in the 2s & 3s if I do my part.
I shoot out to 1000 yards with berger 75gr VLD and 25.5 gr of RL 15 average 3000fps out of Rem 1/9 26' XCR LRT.
I am working with VT 540 and 75gr Bergers 24gr very accurate but slow at 2800fps working up higher loads now.
The Hornadys A-max did not work well at all for me or some other shooters at range.
If you shoot F class like I do in Canada as there is classes just for the .223 it is very important to use very accurate scales as 1/10 gr of powder at 1000y = 1.25 min of change in elevation

I am replying to your old post but just ran across it today. I used to shoot my Savage 12BVSS a lot. It has a 9 twist barrel. I was having very good accuracy using 69 and 75 gr bullets. As everyone else hear has stated, you can't just take my load and duplicate it for your rifle....especially any cartridge length data. However, for reference here's what I used:
69 SRA MK Varget seated to about 2.363 COAL using around 25-26 grs of Varget or about a half gr less of W748. For the 75 gr bullets I used 23.5 - 25.0 Varget with 2.55 as the COAL. I was starting to get good groups, but switched to another rifle about that time.

PLEASE CHECK THESE LOADS IN A LOAD MANUAL in case I have mistyped anything - they should all be well under the maximum.

Good luck. PS - the length above, COAL is the overall length of the loaded round. Since there is so much variation in bullet tips between the same make of bullet, I started measuring instead the LTO or length to ogive. You need a bullet comparator to do that, and the measurements of your loaded rounds will be MUCH more consistent. That's what is important anyway in a non-magazine fed rifle - the distance of the round from the bolt face to the rifling in the chamber.

I'm shooting 75 gr. A-Maxes out of my Savage, McGowan barrel) 1:9. 223.

at 100 yds, shoots better than I can hold. very good groups at 200. have not shot over 200 yds.

best loads are 24.5 gr.s with Varget, & H-4895. the H-4895 gives approx. 100 fps more vel., but slightly less accurate.

once I backed the OAL off .015 from lands, started to shoot better.
