Is anyone measuring/sorting by length lots?

With straight walled cases? No, because as long as the cartridge overall length is the same the volume for powder remains unchanged.

Agreed, but even though the COL and powder charge is the same what is to keep our cartridge headspace from varying an unknown amount between any and all cases that don't hit a trim to length?

Most Smith's chamber .002 plus min SAAMI because SAAMI chamber datum is MIN +.010 and the cartridge SAAMI Max is plus .002,over chamber Max, minus .007 .Check that out on the SAAMI site . There are several new cartridges I have designed that have been SAAMI approved lately that Lapua, Nosler and Norma are keeping in the plus .001 toleranc . So please always chamber at least + .0015 as your min for shooting factory loads, I see several new Nosler loads like that lately . Just so every one knows all three of my tool Companies make the MIN SAAMI go gauge at .0 , then the no go is at +.005 [ NOT LISTED IN SAAMI ] and the Feild gauge is the SAAMI MAX, witch is the plus .010 gauge. I was taught to grind NO GOs for part of the set by RED Elliot and Kieth Francis, They told me that the Military Armory would only let Red make MIN. and Max Gauges and he taught the Gunnys to put tape on the go so they had a snipers No Go . when WWII ended Red and the young fella Kieth who worked for him started making Competition + .005 No GO;s they were my Mentors and P.O. Ackely Was the man that taught me that the standard Go becomes the no Go and a gauge ground back -.004 from the standard GO with the original shoulder angle becomes the Akcely GO Gauge .
