Headspace gage question

I had to remove barrel from Savage 110 in 22-250 in order to extract stuck round.the round came out and i need to put the barrel back. I don’t have headspace gages. But I have fired brass from this rifle (factory ammo). Would it be safe to use this brass as a gage? Thank you.

When a cartridge is fired the brass case expands to meet the chamber and acts like a 'gasket', then slightly contracts allowing extraction. If you use a fired case for a headspace gauge, the setting may be tight compared to what it was before you pulled the barrel.

Use a brass that you have measured to have representative headspace. Measure a piece of clear tape which should be 0.002" thick and tape it to the brass to set the barrel in place. Add another tape for 0.004" no go gage.
