HEADSPACE / BARREL TENON CHECKING GAGE

MANY OF MY STUDENTS HAVE DIFFICULTY USING A DEPTH MIKE WHEN FIRST STARTING OUT ON THE INITIAL BARREL FITTING LABS. I MADE UP THE PRINTS SO THAT THEY CAN ALL MAKE THIS EASY TO USE AND READ FIXTURE FOR MEASURING AND TRANSFERRING HEADSPACE AND BARREL TENON/SHANK DIMENSIONS. I AM SURE THAT THERE ARE MANY NEW LATHE MEN OUT DOING THEIR OWN BARREL WORK THESE DAYS WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM THIS LITTLE DEVICE.
I THOUGHT I WOULD PASS IT ON TO YOU AS WELL. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE PRINTS OF THE PROJECTS THAT I HAVE MY STUDENTS BUILD LET ME KNOW AND I'LL SEE IF I CAN GET THEM POSTED FOR YA. THIS MIGHT KEEP YOU OUT OF YOUR WIVES HAIR OVER THE LONG WINTER MONTHS....LOL.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS,

Speedy:

I gave the school a Lambeth/Kiff Micrometer Adjustable Reamer Stop a few years ago. I have yet to hear a single student from your school say they have been allowed to try the tool. It makes headspacing pretty easy.

Difficulty's reading a depth mic ?????
How can that be more difficult than reading a regular mike ????

One should encourage our youth as they are the future of our sport, instead of sniping at those trying to take up the trade of gunsmithing. We have enough people out there trying to discourage them from firearms let alone those from within. What is constructive from criticism and remarks like yours or do they make you feel superior to others? As I always say “No good deed goes unpunished” I only published the prints and photos to help those who may be interested in a tool that makes their job easier and this is what you get. Incredible……….

Gee, I dunno. It sounded like Nat was trying to encourage youth taking up gunsmithing and Preacher asked a reasonable question. I might ask the same thing; Just how difficult is it to read a depth micrometer?

Your reaction seems a little over-the-top, but you deserve credit for sharing this checking fixture design. Please accept my thanks.

Nat was trying to encourage use of new technology for the students and I thank him for that and his donation. I also wrote to him asking who he made the donation to so that I may track it down and put it to use. Many items come into the toolroom and as toolroom managers come and go, some things get put up and the instructors are unaware of them until they come across them by accident. We have a 6 jaw adjust-tru check that was sitting in a box that sat there for almost ten years and I just happened to come across it because I thought we could use the wood box only to find the new chuck in it? Some of these students have never seen a micrometer or 6" caliper that we take for granted or a lathe or mill because of the environment they grew up in. It is easy to become overwhelmed and make mistakes in their use early on when experience with them has not yet been gained.
I may have been harsh, but students need encouragement and mentoring not negative comments from those of us who have gained the knowledge of tools and their use.

Thanks for your input boss,
Speedy

I think it's best to teach basics first, then the easy way later. You'll never forget the basics.

For those that are old enough, I was taught math the long way, doing it by thinking. Today, I assume people are taught to use a calculator. Well, I have a calculator too, but if I didn't know the basic way of doing math, I would be lost.

I think this is kind of the same scenario. Teach basics first.
