Head Spacing

Hello everyone,
When it comes to head spacing gages-I have two. One with a .375 hole and the other with a .330 hole. both will fit over a 284 Winchester case so what is the rule here to know which one to use. Is there a special spot on the neck it needs to touch? Thanks.

OK,
Now that I have sit here and played with my reload stuff like a little kid. Lets say a loaded round in 284 Winchester is .314 at the neck. Is it best to measure with a bushing with a .314 hole or can a bigger hole work. This will be for measuring resized cases to see if I have the shoulder bumped back .002.

Thanks alot.
If your trying to find the Head spacing for your rifle chamber and you have a 25-06 for an example. A loaded round is .282 but reloading books say its .290. To make the measurement right I use a .282 bushing or a .290. I take it that the .290 would give you the wrong measurement. Am I correct?

Now your talking about your loaded neck diameter. The dimension in the reloading manuals for that will be the maximum allowable loaded neck diameter that will fit into the chamber. Unless your shooting a tight neck chamber this should never be a problem.

How much you want to resize the necks sort of depends on what your doing with the round. If you're single loading and want to jamb the bullet you need light "neck tension" say 0.002" or a bushing of .279" If your going to feed from the magazine, I would go 0.006" - 0.008" or a bushing of .274" or so.,allow for 0.001" of "spring back")
