Head scratcher moments at the range...

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
A few weeks ago I was at the range shooting something, probably my 45-70s, anyway, I was either waiting for someone to go and hang targets or cleaning up after shooting. It had been busy but at this point it was just me and one or two others there. I notice that someone didn't police up their brass over on the other side of the benches so I start picking it up and tossing it in the brass bucket, but some of it looked odd..

On closer inspection it looked like factory 30-06 brass that had been fired in an AI chamber. It was head stamped 30-06 Springfield, so it started life as 30-06, but the shoulder looked like the blown out steep AI shoulder.

This got me to wondering, first, why would someone leave a bunch of fire formed brass on the ground, second, usually guys who have custom chambers shoot enough to clean up behind themselves, and finally, I wonder if the person shooting that rifle even knows that it's not a standard '06 chamber? (which might explain just some (not all) of the pie plates with holes in and around them)

It just struck me as odd that the brass was left behind as it obviously came from a non-standard chamber.

What about the possibility of someone shooting '06 cartridges in some other .30 cal chamber and didn't know it. Saw the brass and figured it didn't look right so he left it there.

we can only guess. I do a lot of shooting at public ranges and one thing stays constant. you never know what people will do next. ex. bump firing 30 rounfs out of an AK at 200 yards, at my targets in front of my off duty police officer friend. dressed up in... u can guess. trench coat and combat boots... someone shooting their home made exploading targets and setting the back stop on fire. then stomping around trying to put it out.. even saw, can I say (ghetto) crowd shooting their new chromed out gold triggered 1911's from the local gun show accidentally shoot another Guy in the leg.. there were about 20 of them to 2 benches shooting at 100 yards.. now you need a permit of hunting license. I believe you should have to take a course to get a gun license like you do a car.

Yea a license to own a gun, yea I just imagine that everyone here on this board would sign up for that---NOT. But it is a good Liberal way of thinking, and more restrictions usually solves everything. Don't they ???

I didn't mean to come off that way. its just the public ranges around here have a lot of people that lack common sense and or respect for firearms. its scary. I understand if they start something of the sort then where will they stop. so its better off not risking.

When the new firearms regulations was introduced in SA, everybody had to qualify and obtain a competancy certification before any new or renewal of existing licences were approved. Naturally everybody was very negative about this, however IMO it has proven to be very effective. I have noticed far better discipline and better gun handling at public ranges.

I would be all for a licensing program except that it is a perfect example of registering the people instead of the firearms. Yes society is irresponsible enough now that they truly need it but I am not therefore I would be against it. Its just a shame the people today think they can act they way they wish without any fear of consequence what so ever.

here in Iceland everyone needs to take a cource and pass a test to be able to own a gun, to be able to take the cource you must have a clean record at the police, you have to get a checkup at you doctor to see if you are OK, and you have to be mentally OK.. then you need three persons to state in writing that they trust you with a gun.

that will still only allow you to buy .22Lr and shotguns, no semiauto though.
after a year without incidents you can buy rifles up to 8mm and semi auto shotguns.

after 2 years in a gun club and 2 years with a license you can apply to buy handguns.

gun related crimes are almost non existent, those that do happen are with stolen or unregistered firearms.

all firearms are supposed to be registered and you must carry you license with you when you are handling your guns, your firearms are all registered on your license.

this is something the public really likes, if you are not trustworthy you can not own a gun !

I shot at a PA Game Commission range when I first started shooting in the late 60's....one time. I never came across so many ingrates concentrated in one place, to say the situation was dangerous is an understatement. Never again. I quickly joined a local gun club, eventually became an active member, and I am now involved in several clubs.

Somebody bought a 30-06AI from the pawn shop/Gun show/Uncle Clem, then went to the Hardware store and bought 30-06 ammo,,
(Uncle Clem don't know guns anyway's)

Fired enough rounds to hit the 14x16" target 6 out of 10 times at 100. Then went home proclaiming to his friends he's ready to go Deer Hunting with his "New Rifle".
"It's accurate enough, but that 30-06 sure does have some kick to it ! "

I'm thinking this is the answer.

Wow, surprised to see this much support for gun control here.

Lets not confuse gun control with gun handling. I am on the same page as every one else with regards to some fool telling me whether I may or may not possess firearms. But like everything else in life, training on the particular subject is very important and this inadvertently sustains our right to bear arms.

Since when do you need a license to buy a car?

Wow, would you look at that! What a brilliant solution you all have come up with to prevent crimes.
