He made a bad decision.

Went out to water the plants on the front today and saw that dude coiled up between a couple of flower pots, took the garden hose and sprayed him off the concrete and then shotgunned him. I leave them be when I’m out in the woods, we see a few here in Arizona but the front porch is off limits. Bad decision.

I assume that is a rattle snake?

Fun fact, a decapitated rattle snake can still strike and inject the venom.

I edited the post to mention a rattle snake. I use to catch them when I was younger which wasn’t too bright. We use to shoot a few while quail hunting too and if they were big enough we would throw them in the dutch oven with some bacon, not a lot of meat but tasty. If the snake was cleaned soon after dispatching them the body would squirm and would even try and strike without the head, a reflex I’m sure but still creepy. That particular snake’s head was vaporized, double A skeet load at 3-4 feet.

Still enough in the middle for a hat band

I always found it interesting when folks shoot something that can be dispatched with a stick.

Fire stick.

A few years ago at the Cactus a rattler appeared by one of the benches on practice day. One gent told everyone to stand back, he was more than capable of handling this. Next thing you know he was bit on the thumb and hauled off to the hospital. Next day he was sporting a well bandaged thumb.

Dave, Walt did that once.. Ushered the damn thing into a 5 gallon bucket without a lid and hauled it off, alive.. I thought the whole thing was pretty ridiculous and asking for an unnecessary bite. Probably a 30 incher..

I first read just your post text with my mouse pointer hovered over the new post link. I thought you had discovered a prowler & chased him out with a garden hose & then shotgun'd him! But just a snake...

BTW: Good job on that "no-legged" vermin...

My brother next door killed one on his porch yesterday evening as well. Not sure why they like porches so much but thats where they like to be. My co-worker stepped out her front porch one evening last year and was struck on her heal. Luckily it was a dry bite and resulted in only a overnight stay in the ER for observation.

Kill all those rattlers!

they are easy to strangle with a forked stick. I used to ride horses with a guy named Arvin. Arvin was the biggest practical joker I have ever known. I would kill one on the trail, and put him in my saddle bag. Avrin would wrap that snake around the toilet. Small wonder that his girl friend did not shoot him.
