HAWKEYE BORESCOPE QUESTION

Jon
I have one. Haven't had it long. I don't think it magnifies the viewable area is small you can see the width of the land in a 6mm barrel and about as long as the land is wide.

Pretty sure they don't magnify at all. Just allow you to focus in for the really close distance that the glass is from the bore.

Jon

If there is magnification I can't tell. The tool/mirror/tube sits so close to the bore you don't need it to magnify.

Good Shooting.

Scroll down to the bottom. I was curious, I thought they did magnify. I guess they do and they don't.

"Microscopes and loupes have very limited depth of field — they are only in clear focus at a single distance, so the magnification is also fixed. A borescope, however, has a very large depth of field — often from infinity down to an inch or less — that makes them easy to use without constant refocusing. The closer an object is to the lens of a borescope, the greater the magnification. To calculate magnification you must know the distance of the subject from the lens. The same principles apply to rigid or flexible borescopes."

Cool :) Good info

Judging from the graph it magnifys a lot. The reason I asked is I cut a tube open and couldn't see but very light scratches which turned out to be firecracking. The scope makes it look like a creek bed.

I think it is closer to 20X. Have tried to get one with no magnification from them but they won't do it

I would not do without mine but it shows imperfections that may not effect your accuracy. It great for selling barrels though! 8)

I am pretty sure that i have read they are 25 x magnification.
For me to take a photo of the view that i am studying, I have to use a small digital camera with a 10 x telephoto lens, and have it on maximum zoom, so everything is basically an "optical illusion" due to the 250 x of the image (25 x 10) and the "fish eye" effect of the tube having a bit of slop inside a 7mm barrel.
When you roll the mirror around 360 deg with the scope held the same distance into the barrel, it magnifies the effect greatly.....causing lands to appear sunken, then raised, then sunken again as you roll over them

This is from the Midway add for the 22" version :
Used to get an ultra-close-up view of the interior bore of a barrel, reloading die or a cartridge case. 22" precision stainless steel optical tube with advanced fiber optics, 25x magnification, a high intensity light source with batteries and a 90-degree direction-of-view mirror tube which allows the user a full 360-degree view. Plus an adjustable focus eyepiece and cleaning kit. The optional 90 Degree Eyepiece is ideal for jobs like looking over the comb of a stock when you cannot get close to the eyepiece. The optional Nova light source is rechargeable and 8x brighter than the standard light source.

Thanks to everyone for their replys. Ecomeat hit on exactly what I suspected and now we all know. This explains why even dust can mimick a gouge in a land. After using one quite a bit it has become a gift and a curse. One little imperfection and you think to yourself that the barrel is junk.

My 17" Hawkeye gave me nightmares too when I first got it. After awhile & looking at several barrels over time (mine & other folks') that edgy feeling wore off once I saw what looked like bad stuff have no effect on accuracy.

Let the barrel's performance be your benchmark, not something you see thru the eyepiece.

The primary things I use the bore-scope for:
- How good of job cleaning my rituals and selected components are doing
- Problem spots that need more cleaning then the rest of the barrel
- How well the barrel was chambered and crowned
- Throat advancement, so I can stay ahead of it in re-chamberings
- Same as above for crown sharpness
- For showing people how poorly most/many factory barrels truly are
- Did I say, for seeing how poorly most factory barrels truly are? ..... lol

I have a question for all Hawkeye owners here. I noticed they offer the "Shooting Edition" kit for a cheaper price. Comes with light kit, case and everything. Does the Shooting Edition have a lesser lense quality or something? Just wondering how Gradient Lense can offer that modelwith all the accessories for a reduced price when some of the other models still retain a higher price tag?

The shooter version is the same quality unit, just lacks the angled eyepiece. You really need it to look down the bore with the stock still attached. The rifle can sit safely in a cradle with no neck strain looking sideways into the lens.

I bought mine with angled eyepiece several years ago from Brunos when they came with that nice mitered corner well made aluminum case. Their website now shows a plastic case, too.

I bought mine for all the reasons dmoran states. Except for his last two listed ones. I have a half dozen popular match barrels. I have many factory "cheap" barrel rifles, several that will closely keep up with the premium tubes using same match grade ammo. They look like they shouldn't shoot as well as brand K and L, ....but they do shoot surprisingly well

As spclark said, "Let the barrel's performance be your benchmark, not something you see through the eyepiece"

The magnification is 25x , I have the basic 17" , you can always add the 90 deg eye piece . Once you see your barrel or one you want to purchase you will ask yourself , how did I do without it .
