Having reamer made

Im thinking out loud here. If i were to have a reamer made for use with factory dies wouldnt it be better to to take a new piece of brass and resize it and send that in, instead of sending unsized brass in?

Usually they want a piece of brass with your bullet seated to where you want it, so it don't matter much if it's been sized or not, but I always send fired sized brass to be on the safe side...

Ya, im familiar with that. But then your die could still over/under size the brass for the chamber, at least thats what id think. I hate factory throats, way to long. That an the neck diameter are my main reason to use a custom reamer.

Don't waste energy second-guessing the die manufacturers. Just send a new piece of brass. That's what you'll be starting with.

robbor: When ordering a chambering reamer, cut to your specs, don't forget chamber over-all-length. I've seen reamers that will leave a gap in front of the case mouth that measures .030' to .040' longer than case length. Not good: this is where the ring of carbon will buildup. I spec my reamers to have a chamber length .010' longer than max. case length. Example: 223 Rem. max case length is 1.760'/ chamber length 1.770'. Overly long is probably a lawyer 'thing' for those who never check case lengths.

I would be more inclined to get the reamer made,if you want a certain neck dia. or oal or throat length then go ahead and spec. that) and have the 'smith chamber and headspace your rifle. He's going to use some type of headspace guage that neither you or the reamer maker have anyway. After you have the rifle built, then either get your fired cases or a chamber cast and get a set of dies made. Just my .02 .

Shootndig,
That would be my approach as well, as one only know what a given reamer will produce in terms of diameters when the final cut is over.

Just fill out the reamer sheet yourself..

Also, go ahead and order go/nogo gages with your reamer set, and make sure whoever finishes your barrel uses them.
Don't let a gunsmith use his own stuff..
