Have you ever shot a coyote with a shotgun....

At night???

This could be a first! So it finally came together last night at my buddy's place. I am sure his wife is thankful since they have two small dogs and two girls ages 3 and 5.

Greetings,
Growing up, my favorite coyote gun was a Savage 24 .222 Rem/20ga 3” chamber. Western WA was thick with dogs. 3” magnum copper plated BB loads dumped more dogs than I care to remember . The 50gr .222 got its share too.

12ga with 00 or 000 buck works very well. Perfect for surprise dogs in open country, or the typical close encounters in the woods. DRT..

I'm a big fan of 3.5" #4 buckshot, I knocked one down close to 100yd's, one of the guy's I hunted with used a Savage #24, a couple AR's, most of us used #4 buckshot

16ga/16ga/6.5x58R, with 1 oz. of NP BB's it is my favorite close cover coyote rig, I kill most of them with the shotgun barrels.

12ga/22 Savage HP 1 1/4 oz. NP BB's again most of them are shotgun kills in close cover.

12ga 3" #4 buckshot, XX full varmint choke. Dead right there at 70 yards. For night hunts all we use is shotguns. A red dot or holographic sight makes hits at night super easy.

If you're not calling them in within shotgun range, you're missing some of the real fun. When you can see their beady eyes looking right at you, and their tongue hanging out -- well it's a gas.

#4 buck is my favorite, and I've dumped a few that were further than I should have. Shotgun doesn't tear up the pelts like a rifle either if you shoot a cartridge that sometimes exits.

If I'm really serious about collecting as many pelts as possible, I carry both rifle an shotty. Set up in cover that allows for close action, hold shotgun for quick shots, and lay rifle beside me for dogs that won't close the distance. It IS kind of a biatch carrying two guns, AND a coyote or two back to the rig.;)

I've shown off this pic several times around here. It's a young one that I called up while quail hunting with my GWP. Only call I had was my lips on the back of my hand, and I dumped him at about twenty yards with a load of 7/8 oz. #8's in my 20 ga.. Hell yeah I've killed coyotes with the shotgun. jd

Jumped a coyote many years while quail hunting along a small timbered creek.20 G.A., 8 shot out of a skeet choke by no than at 10 yds . Rolled him DRT

In 1990 I was wearing a neck tie and wing tip shoes as I ate my corn flake breakfast, when a coyote ran by the window with one of my hens in it's mouth.

I got my boyhood 1897 Winchester 12 ga and gave chase. I think the hen was making enough noise to over my foot steps. I shot the coyote and put the hen in a recovery room [so the other hens would not cannibalize her]. The hen recovered. Somewhere the wife has a picture of our 4 year old son next to that dead coyote.

I got that with #4 shot.
The next coyote walked through the pattern of 00 buckshot.

They don't look much bigger than a fox and we take them quite often with shotguns out here. I started using BBs when I was young, but have switched to AAAs in later years for pure knock down. Can kill them with full choked field guns out to 75 yards.

I do a lot of coyote calling. Nearly half of the coyotes my hunting partner and I shoot each year are with a shotgun. Nothing like calling them into 15 yards and dropping the hammer on the 12 gauge. Like jds, I too save the pelts and the shotgun doesn’t lead to damage that requires sewing.

Seems like all the pelts I kept for myself were shot with a shotgun. 3 inch lead BB's out to 60 yards put the hurt on them.

Shotgun will accompany me on every stand in the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.......

My buddy got 5 last year and it was the first year we decided one of us carry a shotgun.

This year both of us will carry one.

GWPs are the best! I’ve chased a few coyotes out while hunting with mine.

We started really tearing it up when we got into spots that were loaded with dogs, but too brushy to see far. Instead of searching for visibility and blowing the area, we would sit back to back in the brush where we couldn't see more than fifty yards. The shotguns were perfect, and it is literally a BLAST!! jd

Jds,

I am looking forward to my first kill with a Shotgun!

Not looking forward to carrying a rifle and shotgun and seat and Tripod and remote and electronic call and shooting sticks and................;)
