Hate cleaning carbon off your brass necks?

Been shooting my 6.5 Grendel bolt rifle a lot here lately and using a ball powder that has a copper preventer in it, kinda dirty. So every time I get ready to tumble my brass I'm cleaning the carbon/soot of the necks with a piece of scotch-brite pad. Today at the range a old timer showed me a solution and it blew me away it was so simple. He pulled out a towel from a can of "Tub-o-towels" and cut me off a small piece and said "wipe the necks off as soon as the come out" and this works! perfectly clean necks.

Despite its name, CFE 223 is not VV clean. When I was doing some fire-forming I would rub down the necks of freshly fired cases with a hand wipe and its helped. I hadn't even thought about finding a better quality/industrial wipe. I got lazy and let my steel pins do the work.

I'll bite - tell us about your 6.5 Grendel Bolt Rifle. Don't you feel under-gunned using only 30-32gr of powder?!

I think the C in CFE is for copper. My understanding is that the anti fouling agents are intended to build up to a point, so they often appear like they’re making your gun “dirty” when in fact they’re working as intended.

Yeah I know,,, but wouldn't it also be nice if it also ran clean... The level of soot from CFE 223 reminds me of handguns with W231

Undergunned for punching paper or taking game?

I use steel pin for tumbling, which nocks off the carbon/soot from outside cases. Later in the case prep process I anneal the cases and Harvey McCraw's neck polish tool (pictures 2 posts above) is fantastic. I bought a hex drive adapter that fits over the round shaft perfectly so that I could use in a different drill chuck.

I was baiting Lefty... I am big proponent for right-sizing your rifle. I like large rifles, but don't need a 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 for the majority of hunting (distances or size of game). For that matter, I don't really need a barrel longer than 20". I would rather have a compact field rifle the is right-sized cartridge, and use the weight savings to add a suppressor to the rig... just easier to carry and maneuver in tight spaces, such as golf carts/ATV and deer blinds. Also, kid friendly.

For past 10 years I've been hunting with "micro-calibers", 223 and 300BO. More recently, I added a 6.5 Grendel and currently have a 300 HAMR build underway.

Way, way, way, too sensible. Anything less than 70 grains of powder and the deer just won't respect you.

And I thought a patch and some solvent was enough just to clean the outside of the necks. Has worked for me for years.

Wet a paper towel with 91% rubbing alcohol and wipe the carbon off the necks. Cheap and it works. Leaves no residue.
If your not going to anneal and the next step is resizing then use Ballistol it will not only remove the carbon but it will also lube the case for resizing.

Not using CFE223, using Alliant Power pro Varmint and or TAC. Varmint is awesome powder in the Grendel. Can get great accuracy at lower speeds 2400-2500 and can drive 123gr bullets to 2700 if need be and run 107gr bullets to 2900 plus. Accuracy sweet spot is 2450 for 123's and 2720 for 107's.
My grendel is my "fun gun" when I just want to go hit clay birds scattered on the hill at 300yds.

It is a fun caliber. I am using 123gr SST and H4895 at 2,500 fps. My tests using CFE 223 worked well for additional 100fps. Currently, working up 90gr TNT with 8208 XBR.

Plus 1 for PPV. easily 150fps quicker and more accurate that most. 8208 comes in a close second - and what I use mostly, as PPV is unobtanium at present down here - and 30% more expensive when I can be found. Also get good results with Benchmark and 100g pills.
