Has gas prices changed your match attendance plans?

Well, it sure has mine!

I just can't afford to travel to some of the ranges I liked shooting. Mifflin comes to mind. I really liked shooting there, but with gas/food/entry fees/reloading expense/etc.etc.etc., the cuts have to begin somewhere.

Don't it just stink!

I used to do a couple Cowboy Action or Silhouette matches a month. But I calculated the transport cost, using a $0.35/mile rate, combined with the match fees, and I figured it was costing me up to $150/match to attend and that's not counting bullets or powder. Now I'm down to a couple rifle matches a month, usually within an hour's drive. People should remember that fuel is only part of the equation--depreciation, tire wear, maintenance all add up as well.

I was planning on going to Mifflin Co. this Sat. but beacause they decided to jump the cost of gas up from $2.65 to $3.39 I can't afford to go. I drive about 1 1/2 hrs. one way. I don't even go to Williamsport that much any more either. This effects everyone, and the government knows it. That's why nothing is being done to regulate it.

Driving less now. For everything, including matches. Of course with a full size 4x4 V-8 pickup... Thankfully I really like my local area and don't need to drive much. Generally only put 6000 - 8000 miles a year on my rig. Guy

Sounds like a couple of you guys need to get together and just take one vehicle and share the cost our fuel prices here in Australia are now up around $1.20 a Liter which is about $4.50 a US gallon Luckily i drive a Toyota Dual Cab Ute 4 cyl that gets Approx 26 miles to the gallon. But is sure starting to hurt $60 to fill the tank

Kevin,

Yep, Mifflin's two hours for me and I'm in the same boat. It's tough for you, because in your business when you go you might sell some uniformers, or line up some gunsmith work.
I really like shooting Mifflin, and like the people. Abe and company put on a first class shoot. But as you know when it starts to get tough the family comes first.

Danny and Kev -- seems you are not the only ones -- only had 30 cf shooters yesterday -- and some WEIRD wind!!

I don't shoot competion much anymore but when I get a chance to go kill a groundhog it's nothing for me to drive 50-100 miles to kill one. That stuff has got to slow down or stop......no wonder the varmint mobile has so many miles on it!

I go to an indoor pistol shoot Thursday evening. I drive 35 miles to a buddy's house and ride the next 25 to the match. I find myself not going more often now when the buddy isn't. I try to have a buddy to share drives to the range, he drives one week I drive the next, it is around 45 miles to either of the clubs that I belong to. I'm retired and that may have something to do with it. Also there are 3 of us going on the 3000+ mile bird and prairie dog shoot next month rather than two. 200 gallons of $3 gas devides better 3 ways.

Cheer up guys!!
You don't know what high fuel prices should look like. Here in South-Africa we pay R5.95/L wich is the equivalent of $4.30/gallon. Try to tell your wife it is still cheap, no way!

Well guys
Over here in the not so sunny UK we pay about $7-50 per gallon,,4 ½ litres.)
Rip off Britain,at its finest.

I had hoped to make a match this weekend. Not gas prices alone but gas availability. In the Florida panhandle gas has gotten pretty scarce with maybe one out of ten stations getting any gas shipments at all. And then it doesn't last long either because word spreads fast and the line is formed before the tanker even finishes emptying.

Prices topped $3.50 the other day and will likely top $4.00 today. For folks like my moron brother who let his idiot wife nag him into buying a brand new Suburban this summer this is an eye openner. It would be $100 to tank that pig up if he could find gas to begin with.
