Has Anyone Used Reloder 17 in a .280 Remington or 7mm RSAUM?

Yes I have in a 280. What is your intended use?

The .280 is a hunting rifle and I will likely settle on a 140 - 168 gr bullet. It has a new Bartlein barrel chambered using a custom reamer with .082 FB (3.450" with an accubond). I am just trying to get some feeling about what I can expect with the powder. Velocity? Accuracy? etc.

No experience with the two cartridges you mention, but I have used it extensively for 7X57 and light loads in a 7mm REM MAG.

It works great in both those cartridges. I loaded the 140 gn to 2950 fps in the Mag.

Turns out, if you do the powder matching program on QuickLoad, RL-17 comes out top with the 7X57 as to efficiency.

I would guess H4350 as well as RL-17 would be good for the 280. In fact, Quick load says that a Hornady 162 gn A-MAX ( a real deer slayer at moderate velocities as well as accurate) will go at 2800fps with only 48 gn of RL-17 and is 10% under a max load.

I have always loaded 140 Ballistic Tips and Accubonds over IMR 4350 (54.3 gr) or RL22 (58.0 gr) in the .280. I may go back with the 140 ABs in the new barrel, but haven't decided for sure. Some of the AB LR bullets may be worth looking at. Since I have to start from the beginning working up a load in the new barrel, I figured that I would also look at RL 17 and 19 along with the 4350.

I've been using RL17 in my 300Saum & 7WSM. I recently decided i couldn't be bothered with the problems I'm having with this powder. Velocity was good, but inconsistent with varying temps. I have recently changed to Viht N540 in the SAUM, velocity is every bit as good as the RL17 but without the presure signs. I haven't had time to get to the range yet but am hoping for good result when i do.

I'm sure it would be great in a 280 hunting rifle. I had amazing velocity and accuracy with Berger 180 hybrids out of my F-Class rifle using RL-17. It just wouldn't maintain match grade accuracy throughout the changes in multiple day matches. If that is the kind of accuracy you require, H-4831SC is the powder for a 280.

Was it an issue of number of rounds or changes in conditions? i.e. did it get fouled? or did variation in temperature create issues?
