Has anyone seen this before on there brass?

I was about to purchase an Anschutz 900 in 222. rem and i got a chance to shoot it first. i bought a box of winchester superx 50 grain soft point just to test the rifle to make sure everything worked well. to start it cycled flawlessly of course, and it shot superbly but then i saw the brass. I fired 9 rounds for 3 differen't 3 shot groups and all 9 pieces of brass came out like this!

i have never seen anything like it or why it would be doing this. Is the chamber messed up, its like it expanded larger then it should! it also made me wonder if it would cause case head separation. im going to show a gunsmith it as well to see what he thinks. Brass isn't the easiest to come by so i dont want it being under too much stress that its being wasted!

Without actual measurement numbers it's hard to tell what you are trying to express with these pictures, although the web area of the fired case looks to be unsuported, maybe.

My .02: If the chamber is in that condition, how about the rest of the rifle? You could use the info to knock the price down far enough to cover a custom rebarrel. That and I wouldn't accept "I can fix it".

imo, the chamber is clearly not standard, factory ammo should never do this,

someone has altered it, -- 222m would be much longer, so consider a set back rechamber or replace the bbl TOO MUCH $$

in you can, having the chance to shoot firs, RUN VERY FAST TO THE DOOR!!!

If it's been properly rechambered there's nothing really wrong with the chamber, is there?

Yes it's factory marked 222. Like I said it shot awesome but the second I saw that I couldn't figure out what was happinging. I have a gunsmith close to home I'm going ask him what he thinks and if he will chamber cast for me. But if not I'm letting it go. I was very excited for this rifle. Barrel is in good shape, trigger is increadible, stock overal is good just needs to be refinished.

It's probably the picture but pic #2: only looking at the neck of the brass....it looks much larger in diameter. Meaning od.
Don't know if that is what you are referencing or not but it sure does look way bigger in diameter.
Like I said it could be the pic but it looks like that neck would hold a .257
I am probably looking st it wrong or didn't understand your post.

i think that is just the picture. What i was referring to was the body of the brass. Right about the rim of the brass there is a clear line where it looks like it had been polished and expanded from there up.

Thanks for the clarification. And at "clear line where it looks like it has been polished and expanded" does it actually measure as such, or can you 'feel' a bulge, or does it strictly look polished?

I own an Anschutz .222 in the 1532 model and thoroughly enjoy it. The first thing I would suggest looking at on the fired case is to check for case head separation. If that is an issue then it would be my idea to find out why and as others have said, the possibility of the chamber having been altered to an improved version. If that's the case, then it would be necessary to find out what has to be done to safely form the improved cases without causing the problem. I wouldn't run just yet after you said it shoots so nice but would definitely find out what exactly is going on and what it would take to fix it or prevent it. If you're a handloader, it might be easier than you think. Best Wishes

Have you removed the action from the stock ? A friend had one that did the same thing .On the bottom of the barrel it BS on it and it shot just like yours does . He just factory ammo. He has ben offered $2.000 for it. I thought he had the only one in the USA. Great buy . Larry

I noticed it mostly because it clearly looked polished from that line right up past the shoulder. after further inspecting the brass that line was the start of a bulge measuring within .05 thou of each other if i remember correctly. If you ran from the rim upwards over the polish you could feel a concerning bump where your nail hit the line and then almost rough from there up.

what do you mean it had bs on it?

You might check for incipient head failure. Take a piece of stiff wire (coat hanger, for example), put a short 90-deg. bend in it, & see if it''ll catch inside the case wall near the head. If it will, there might be too much headspace.
