Has anyone from the US competed in Europe?

I have been invited to compete in Italy, but the match director is unsure about the steps I would need to take in order to bring a rifle.

One person told me they competed in France, and all they needed was an invitation from the director. He said I need to fill out a form with the ATF.

If anyone here can share their experience, it would be appreciated.

In the first instance, you need to contact the Italian Consulate in your country. Check the local website-it should tell you what you will need to get an import permission etc. You will also need export and re-import permission from the US. Don't plan a trip to another european country - moving the firearm around will get you in a heap of bother - there are no physical borders (well, not many) but a world of hurt if you get caught. Just fly in and out of Italy. Dont forget that some calibres - mostly military ones, are not normally allowed in Italy.

Each country is a little different. Not sure I know anyone that has made the trip to Italy.

An invitation in English and the native language is normally needed and helpful.

I expect they will want you to fill out a form to import the firearm and ammunition.

You will also need to complete a form at a us customs office to get the firearm back into the US.

Be prepared to have issues and carry multiple copies of each form.

Pm me if you want to talk. I have always had some assistance from others that have traveled before me to that country.

On the USA side, you'll need DHS/CBP Form 4457 "Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad".

Unfortunately I don't have any information for you on the other country's requirements.

Best of luck!

Make sure the 4457 lists the scope, spotting scope, binos, cameras or anything else you are taking.
Tape a copy inside your gun case. keep a copy on you.

I travel with a bunch of underwater camera gear...That has been more difficult that my rifle or shotgun.

I have had great luck traveling with firearms. But, internationally without a completed form you are toast.
You also need to check on ammunition, most airlines have a weight limit and can be sticky on airline approved containers. If you fly out of somewhere they see a lot of rifles it will be easier.

If you use a pelican case the TSA may require a lock on every lockable position...I found that out the hard way on a flight back.
