Hart barrel problems

A good friend of mine has retired from the gun making buisness some years ago. While at his shop the other day, I bought an NOS hart barrel from him. It's marked .2242 9" twist.

It was my goal to chamber for a .223 REM and mate it to a REM 700 action. The bbl was 27" long and a very heavy bbl contour. I wished to have it cut back to 22". We cut the bbl back and cleaned up the muzzle. I went to insert my PT&G range rod, and it would not go. The range rod inserted into the chamber end.

I called Dave Kiff thinking I had an oversize range rod. He gave the specs and my tool matched perfectly. He noted that he has had problems with Hart bbls being undersized in the past.

I tried to insert a 22LR reamer into the bore to check for fit. The reamer would not fit. It measured .216" on the pilot.

Has anyone had this sort of problem with Hart bbls? Any one have an idea about what I should do now??

many thanks,
Brock

The only thing you can do is call Hart. I know the barrel has been cut off already but with a problem like that I believe they would make it good. Brian.

Have you checked the bore for a tight spot where it was cut off. You might open up the edge with center drill and measure the bore with a pin gauge.

Nat,

I did champher the edge with a center drill, thinking it was a burr causing the problem, It didn't help at all. I didn't think to ask if he had a pin gauge. Will do that in an email now. Thanks.

Yes
I sent a 30 cal barrel back to them because it was tite.
They relapped it or so they say and sent it back. I was a little leary about it but I chambered it in 300WSM and it shot very well.

I'm surprized at this posting'' Usually they are lapped to within 1/10000''
Somthing must have slipped. maybe an unlapped barrel got out of the shop.
There are three people lapping in stages, One one finish laps and it's hard to
understand one getting out like that.
QC is generally very good to excellent.
send it back and first talk to Jack Sutton about the problem.
They are usually there monday to thursday 8 am to 4.30 pm

Try a pin gauge 216 to .217 is usually the bore range on a 22 bbl
Some go to .218 to 219 on a centerfire
maybe it's not a 22 bbl. they do make.20 cals
One other thing that might have happened.
the box is maked 22 cal and it may be a 20 cal'''

The barrel is marked with an indelible pen from hart. It has the purchaser's name, twist, and bore diameter .2242. My best guess is that it wasn't lapped.

Hart has returned my phone call, but I work nights. So, I was sleeping....

I hope to work on it again this weekend.

They are usually in the shop by 8am Monday to thursday.
Jimmy is usually there monday to friday
I hope you get it cleared up.

I would hope it would not be a 20 cal barrel, because he stated than his range rod fit in the chamber end.
