Harrels precision die

I have the number 8 die for 6ppc. I was trying to size some brass and bump the shoulders back 2thou.
I adjusted a half turn each time until I got the results that I was needing. However it got to the point I had 4 threads showing on the underside of my press.
I was like man what the hell is the deal, it shouldn't take this much to bump the shoulder back.
After about 45 minutes of getting aggravated by the situation I took out the neck bushing and tried again.
NOW I have oversized my brass by 5 though.
Why would the bushing cause it from not bumping the shoulders with it in the die. I thought I was a single step process...

PLEASE SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY.. I DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH SMART ASS COMMENTS.
Thank you for those that respond...

Some die-press combinations will require the die to be screwed down to the point of cam-over. In some cases a few thousandths will need to be removed from the face of the shell holder to get proper bump. I never experienced the bushing not allowing the bump.

I'm using a rcbs junior press if that makes a difference.
I used the same shell holder and press last year only difference was the harrels die.. I had to buy a different one fora lil more sizing

I would definitely look at removing a few thousandths from the shell holder face. I would not take anything off the die bottom surface.

I always set my Harrell's bushing dies with the bushing removed using the little brass bump gauge that is supplied with the die.
BTW Harrell's only make 1-4 in half increments. Is it possible you have a 3?(doesn't matter for this particular problem)
I'm using my short action customs 6mm 30 degree shoulder gauge... not sure it makes a difference but it could.

If someone has a redding #12 shell holder could you measure the thickness of it..
I'm sure me using the lee or rcbs shell holder could be the issue.
I might pickup up the competition shell holder set if its thinner

Makes no sense to me that the bushing would have anything to do with the case going into the die.
I wonder if the brass sholder thing with the die is being mistaken for a bushing.

No sir I pulled it out and put in a .263 bushing....
I don't really know what the hell is happening. I'll guess I'll found out on match day

Did you send Harrell’s fired cases to obtain the die?

When you say oversized the brass by 5 thou, I assume this means you bumped the shoulder too far. If this is the case then I don't believe it has anything to do with the shell holder. If the shell holder was too thick then the die would hit it before you got sufficient shoulder bump. When I size with my Harrell's PPC die in my Rockchucker the die never touches the shell holder when it is set correctly.
As far as how many threads are showing when the die is set correctly that is a function of the press itself and the die, normally it doesn't, matter.
Off the top of my head the bushing normally won't stop the die from going down too far but an improperly set decapping rod could. When you remove the bushing you normally also remove the top of the die containing the decapping rod.
What I would suggest is as follows
1 back the decapping rod out by about 1/4 in. to get it out of the way entirely.
2 check the bushing fit in the die. It should float freely. You should hear it rattle when you shake the die.
3 as varminthunter1 stated above set up the die for the correct bump using the little Harrell's brass bump gauge (I always use them and have never had a problem) and without the bushing or the top piece containing the decapping rod, from the die itself.
When you do this you need to turn the die very little approx 1/8 in. to get .001
movement up and down.
4 once you get the die set correctly then install the bushing and die top ( with the decapping rod backed out). Size another case and you shouldn't see any difference in the bump. If you do check your press as Frank stated in the above post.
5 once you get the bump correct then slowly screw down on the decapping rod until it just knocks the primers out.

Hope this helps
Pete
