Harrells Tuner/Brake or...?

No doubt, PC is one of my favorite topics. Theres still much to be learned.
I think you're on the right track with stocks. If you can keep the cg low and have an adjustable plate up front, that would allow you to adjust the stock stiffness, I think you could draw good comparative conclusions...same gun, same load, same everything except the tweak of a screw to make the stock more or less stiff. It might even be made to look respectable with some imagination but what I have in mind would suffice to show that it works or doesn't. What I have in mind is an adjustable cantilevered bag rider, so to speak.--Mike

Thought of doing that many times. Now that Mcmillan is making the stocks for us its even easier, they are really keen on testing. Bedding all these to the same action. Big differences between them. We'll see what we can learn. And we are testing stocks we can actually duplicate and use.

The original tuner, the BOSS, was a tuner brake.

Haven't seen to many BOSS tuner brakes at a benchrest match. Maybe the Boss is better, but I've had zero luck trying to tune with a tuner/brake. Several of my customers have experienced the same thing. The groups just move around the paper and never tighten up. It seems like the brake portion cancels or screws up what the tuner is doing!

I wonder if a tuner brake would work better if the brake portion was first with the tuner on the end!

Bart I had a good dasher barrel that I shot quite a bit before putting a ras tuner brake on. After working with the tuner it shot every bit as well as before which I'd say would have put it in the winners circle anywhere in the right hands. I am not a big tuner fan, only because I have never seen them improve over what I could do without one. That goes for grouping and width of the window. But in that case it did not hurt any. Id have to say it worked as it should have.

Alex,

I could get my guns shooting with a RAS and Harrell but couldn’t reliably use the tuner portion to keep the gun shooting. So essentially they turned into muzzle brakes.

I meant that as a bit of trivia. Not going to be too many brakes in most benchrest formats anyway. Not allowed at all in F-Class.

I have one on my tube gun that I have for 300 yard varmint matches where they are allowed. I'll see if I can replicate what I've seen with the Shadetree and Bukys tuners. But, I didn't get it to chase tune during the day as there really isn't much chance for that in a grip and rip format.

Greg,

Actually there are quite a few muzzle breaks on the line at 1000 and 600 Benchrest matches. Like you said they aren’t allowed in F Class or short Range group or score. They are allowed in UBR.

I have tuners on my short range and long range guns but the tuner brake is a lot better muzzle break then tuner.

I thought about this all night. I can see where the radial muzzle blast of the brake combined with, perhaps light weight and a stiff barrel might make the tuner less effective.

I'll just have to get my rig out and test. That's what it always comes down to...scientific method.
