Hardening full length sizing die???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
Sooooo,

I have a project in the works that will require a full length sizing die to be made from a Newlon precision die.

After my smith cuts the die, where should i send it to be hardened????

Phil.

Any place that does heat treating. I'm in Phoenix Az. so I send my stuff to a Co. called Phoenix Heat treating. It will cost about $100 for the first one & 50 cents for every one after. If you want it done right you have to pony up.

Phil,

I Googled "heat-treatment facility" around your area & hit on a few that looked respectable. That being said, you may not have much luck calling one directly for a 1-pc job. I would suggest calling around to a few tool & die shops, if you can find any local. They would be able to either do it, or send it out with another batch of parts to a heat-treater to be done. Cost should be reasonable either way, but if they send it out, turn-around time might be a couple weeks.

Thanks for the suggestions and leads guy`s.....

Butch, i was wondering about Meloniting them.....

Make sure you buy the Stainless dies from Newlon and not the 12L14
Can you truly harden 12L14 other than case hardening?

No, 12L14 won't harden on it's own accord. It's a creampuff steel for machining, though. Cuts like butter & gives very nice finishes. Casing or coating are the only options I'm aware of in regards to hardening it.

Just wondering... I had a piece of 416r (piece of gun barrel) hardened. Or at least I thought it to be hard. came out at 32 Rockwell. What hardness have you gotten from Melonited by MIMI TruTec, Butch. Thanks.

You know, I have a Wilson Rockwell tester and have not used it. Joel Kendrick says about 58-60 on SS and 60-64 on CM.
Remember that Melonite is a case hardening. You wouldn't want a barrel over 32RC.

Can you truly harden 12L14 other than case hardening?

12L14 has lead added to it and minimal carbon content. It is what is termed a "free machining" steel. 40 years ago when I did machining work, this type of steel cut like butter. It is soft and very very easy to cut and get a good finish on.

So the answer is no.

I lifted this off the web:

You can case harden blunt objects of it using heat-treatment with a long soak in a bed of carbon, or with Kasenit or Cherry red.

I would make out of 17-4ph h1150 and not heat treat. Heat treatment often changes dimensions.
