Hard case Layout

What is the preferred layout of placing a scoped rifle in a Pelican/Storm/SKB type hard case – scope closest to the handle or the hinges? Does one layout give greater protection to the scope?

A guy I know says lay the scope toward the hinges. He says that if the case ever comes open the rifle won't fall on the scope.

I prefer the scope closest to the handle. That way, when I'm handling it, or storing it in my vehicle with the handle also up, it's oriented in the shooting position, without any weight bearing down on the scope. In the house, I lay the case level.

Scope towards the handle. Odds are if ever depose or set down hard it will be on the hinge.

+1, scope towards handle, just like 90% of all soft and padded cases.
