Happy 6.5 Day!

Two .260 Ackleys (one F Class set up and one long range hunting rifle), one 6.5 Grendel gas gun and one 6.5-.284 Norma.

Ironically, if I hadn't been so frustrated with my .260 Remington, making me switch to the 6mmBR, this site wouldn't exist.

But I do still like the 6.5mm -- particularly shooting the original 123gr Lapua Scenar in a 6.5x47 Lapua. That bullet is very forgiving and easy to tune.

What was the problem with the 260?

Boss: There was no Lapua Rem .260 brass at the time, so I made it from .308 Win and .243 Rem. I fought a battle with doughnuts in the neck. Also this was a Savage factory barrel. I tried lots and lots of powder/bullet combos in search of superior accuracy and it seemed that gun would always toss one or two out of the group, so about .8 MOA was the best I could average.

I finally ditched the barrel, got a PacNor 3-groove chambered in 6mmBR and loaded up 30.00 grains of Varget behind some Scenar 105s. The first measured group out of the gun, rounds 15-18 (4 rounds) went into a measured 0.168, with three witnesses.

That experience taught me that you should not waste time (and powder) on mediocre barrels. Run superior brass and the best barrel you can buy. Otherwise you're chasing your own tail.
