Happier than a dog wagging two tails - new 6SLR

I got to shoot my new 6SLR barrel (Savage PTA action) for the first time today. And I'm HAPPY.

But first I want to thank Preacher for all the work he did to make this happen. He chambered, turned the Bartlein 1.25" barrel (HV profile) down to fit the Savage action, threaded, and installed a muzzle brake.

I shot four powders today and all four show promise. The four are; H4831sc, IMR7828ssc, RL-22, and RL-17. Pushing hBN coated 105 AMax bullets and lit with 215M primers (just because I have lots of them, I will compare other primers after I narrow down to one powder.

The barrel; 28" Bartlein 5R, 1:8 twist, .243/.237 bore, HV profile.

Nomad if you don't post pics I call bulls$j!t. What brass did you use, I looked into the cartridge not long ago but couldn't find enough info to keep me going, also what velocities were you getting?

I used PRVI brass that I bought at Graf's for $40 per hundred. I am also using Forster 6XC dies screwed out .122".
Velocities are irrelevant at this point due to the method I chose to start load development. I loaded two loads for each of the powders. Those two loads were .5 and 1.5 grains below what QuickLoad predicted would be on an OBT node. I also made a Powder Ba adjustment in QL based on records from another 6mm cartridge. Since today's shooting, I have made another adjustment to Powder Ba and I will load each powder to hit the OBT node.
But I can tell you my slowest MV was 2958 fps with 42.09 grains of H4831sc. And my fastest was 3154 fps with 43.57 grains of IMR7828ssc. I also expect RL-22 to be at 3203 fps when on a node.
And here are pics of the rifle.

Thanks Guys. LOL, Robert, I'll have to work on that but getting my portable shooting bench up on the roof won't be easy. If I set it up here in this NC RV Park, I would probably have the local SWAT team swarming in a few minutes. :)

Edit: BTW, the groups that were shot yesterday were shot at the local city police range. A retired Park Ranger gave me a key to the gate and I have their permission to shoot there as long as the cops aren't using the range.

Looks like Preacher did a great job. Changing contours on a barrel is not an easy task. Nicely done. 8)

Thanks, Paul. You are 100% correct - Preacher did a fantastic job. I couldn't be happier. Or to put it another way - if I was any happier, I would have to be twins. ;D

Thanks, Wayne. maybe we can bust chucks together some day this summer. We should be in OH around 6/12.

BTW, any new info on that idiot that is shooting over cows, etc? The last I heard the Knox County Sheriff was closing in on him.

Sounds like a plan on chuck bustin'.

Havent heard anything lately about that clown, been busy planting beans and visiting dad in the hospital. :( WD

I shoot the 6MM SLR as well and have 3 loads that are very, very accurate
44.6 grains of H 4831 SC 107 Sierra 3347 fps, 46.75 grains of IMR 7828 3589 & 42.6 IMR 4350 3420.9. This cartridge seems to shoot most bullets accurately
These loads were used with W/W brass & Fed GM 210 M primers. This all from a 30" Bartlein 5R groove 1:7.5 twist barrel on a Savage action.

Very interesting, Biggame1. I just shot four groups today, four powders, and I think I will settle on IMR7828ssc.

Next up is varying seating depths, then I will try three different primers. Unfortunately I don't have 210Ms to try.
My 4831 load was a couple tenths more than yours but 7828 over two grains less than yours.
I forgot to take a cleaning rod with me to the range, so there was no cleaning between powder changes. Those lone bullet holes were the first shots with the powder change.

I am having excellent results with H4350. Running a 1 in 8 Bartlein barrel myself. Getting 3180fps with 105 Hornady BTHP. Seated .005 into the rifling. Its a tack driver for sure.
