Handgun Optics

I shoot target with my XP100 7mmbr with a 3X12 Burris, it awesome. PROBLEM Deer hunting I can not get the cross hairs on target quick enough. The field of view is to confined.

What would be a good optic for very fast target acquisition with that hand gun? Red Dots? Halos?

Thanks in advance Harvey

What is your typical distance on deer?
Does it have a brake?
What kind of rest set-up do you have in the field?

Typical, most often presented) shot is less than 100 yds when on the move or in heavy woods. Often I am put in a hedge row where I can cover out to 250 yds.

I usually can shoot the shorter distance off hand. Those are moving from a walk to trot. Never shoot running deer. Throw in a coyote and I will try a running shot BUT the 3x12 it is difficult. Even a 2x is difficult. When on watch I try to use a stump or limb crotch for a rest.

No muzzle brake. The gun shots 1moa so I not change anything there.

The 2-7 Burris has a wider FOV than just about any LER scope.
LER's are difficult to get used to, ut with a lot of practice it can become second nature.
I typically use brakes now and riflescopes on specialty handguns for hunting.
Does your Xp have the factory Zytel/plastic stock?

It has the factory stock. I use it during deer season here because can not carry a rifle in field for 2 mos. most of time I use it during summer off a bipod. Summer is usually long shots at wood chucks.

I can usually get it on target but a running coyote almost impossible. I've never shot at a running deer.

I do carry a .44 mag rev for short range heavy cover etc.

Harvey, it sounds like u already have the optic u need. We,XPhunter and i) have used the 3-12x at tactical matches where fast tgt. acquisition is important. Once u get used to the 3-12x @ 12x it's not too difficult.

Besides that if u crank the 3-12x down to about 8x or so u will have the same reticle subtensions along the BP reticle that the 2-7x has? They're very close...and u'll have a much better FOV,i.e. for all practical purposes u really already have a 2-7x in the 3-12x). For 250-yd. shots on deer-sized tgts. u don't really need to use the reticle. If u have a 200-yd. zero with the 7-08 cartridge you're probably still point blank range on not only the deer, but probably coyotes as well @ 250 yds.

Besides that if u're chuck shooting with that rig in spring/summer then u'll be missing that 12x option.

The only real problem i've had with that scope is the eye relief is too long to get a full FOV at 12x when shooting prone off a bipod using a center-grip stock. Have u noticed this when shooting chucks from prone? I used to use mine for coyote hunting, but don't any more since i've switched to mostly rifle scopes. The 1 gun i still have it on i had to use a modified Ken Farrell base, with the optic as far forward as possible. It works better now.

I'll put in more time with it. I only use it for coyotes during deer season here because can't carry a rifle in field. I put it away till summer for short range woodchucks.

I really like the AR for coyotes and bolt guns for woodchucks.

Thanks for the thoughts. I spend more time with the XP it shoots to well to stay in safe as much as it does.
