Hand reamer

Hi everyone

I bought a short chambered barrel and I'm going to finish it with a hand reamer. I was hoping I could get some advise/tips from you guys and maybe hear about some first hand accounts from some people who have done this before. Thanks, andy

Use a slip fit bushing on the end of the correct reamer, go slow, use lots of oil, pull and clean often..
You'll do a fine job...

I don't believe that you stated what your goal is going to be. Alter the chamber for the neck or increase the throat/leade?

If you want to increase the throat/leade, you should talk to Dave Kitt at PTG. I wanted to increase the throat/leade on a 6.5 Grendel to turn it into a .264 LBC. He sent me the chamber drawing for the .264 LBC, and a 6.5/.264 Uni-throater, and some great instructions. With a Stony Point gage, I was able to achieve the LBC chamber that I wanted.

Dave Kitt will be your friend.

A short chambered barrel needs the complete chamber pushed fore-ward to the correct headspace..
The correct reamer will have the correct throat and leade built in it...
Just cut it to the correct depth and your GTG....

Thanks for answering that preacher. After puting a case in the short chambered barell , it looks like I only need to ream thousanths of an inch maybe into the hundreths of an inch.

Also I am wondering how much torque to put on the barrell, I just don't want to put too much on it?

Bill , we also have a line of Uni neck reamers and uni neck and throaters ground and set up in the same kit form and they work great for the folks that want to change lengths or sizes on rifles that are complete an a person dose not have the time or means to tear down the rifle. For the short chamber barrel that a person may want to hand ream Preacher is correct a lot of folks buy a chamber reamer and the micrometer stop kit that Nathanial and I sell or a pull through head space reamer on rod and pull and turn clock wise until the bolt closes . I think it is better to do the chamber in the lathe but some times a person just can not take the time or have the ability to get to a machine or Gun smith ,I have seen some great shooting rifles that have had a fellow put the chamber in by hand . I am glad we have folks like you all to help folks out on this forum . Thank You Dave Kiff

As far as torquing the barrel onto the receiver, I pull it up tight by hand and then hit the barrel vise extension with a 5# hammer to seat it.. Never had one come loose doing it that way....
I have also used a action wrench with a good torque wrench set at 50#'s to seat a barrel, and never noticed any difference........

I hope Preacher doesn't mind me answering the question directed to him. No, he meant 50 ft/lbs.
Scopes and stocks to actions are in in/lbs. But not barrel to action.
