as i have said on previous posts, i really like and have had really good results with lilja and mcgowen barrels.....custom hand lapped barrels are hard to beat......
i was just looking at all the features of the forum on the home page and saw a video that dan lilja made about a comparison of a factory new remington barrel and one of his lilja custom barrels..... if you ever want to see why a new factory barrel may not shoot watch the video....

I have seen the video but I doubt that all barrels from remington are that bad.I fully believe it was hand picked to make his point.I have looked down many barrels and have never seen one that bad. They are out there but if they all were that bad you would have everyone returning their new rifles for rebarrel.

i don't think that was inferred that all would be that way and you are probably right about selecting, but if it were a once in life time thing how did it get out of the factory....i have looked down several barrels, different mfg and not seen quite that bad but some close especially the mill markings going across instead of smooth longitudinal..... i even said if you get a new barrel that doesn't shoot you may know why.....

Thats probably part of the problem with my problem child 22-250, mill marks in the barrel. Its amazing when I push a patch down that stock Savage barrel and then push a patch down my McGowen barrel how much better the feel is with the McGowen barrel. The difference in the amount of time it takes to clean them makes it apparent that a custom handlapped barrel is the only way to fly! Thats just my opinion though!

Few of us shooters have access to the quality borescope thet Dan Lilja, and other barrel makers, have. Even fewer know what they're looking at.

All the better barrel makers hand lap their barrels.

The better button barrel makers lap both before buttoning and after buttoning.

The better cut rifling barrel makers lap after cutting the rifling.

This makes their barrels more consistent in both bore size and surface condition.

To clarify there is nothing as fine as a hand lapped barrel. That barrel he showed us had to be the worst example of any barrel that I have personally seen. I think he was showing us the far end of the spectrum to illustrate the vast difference between factory screw ups and perfection. Lilja barrels are some of the best barrels out there without a doubt.I am not slurring dan as I have great respect for him and his barrels. I know that remmys going down hill some with the vast numbers of guns they make to offer cheaper guns so people can afford them. Anyways getting off subject,I wish I could afford my own haweye borescope. It is just out of reach right now.But it is a sound investment for anyone in the competition game. You cant go wrong.

The Hawkeye pales in comparison to the borescopes that the major barrel makers use. I like mine fine but, it is a far cry from the best.
