Hammer Hunter 85gr. 6.5mm bullet

I have been shooting the hammer mono bullets out of a ruger american predator 6.5cm with good accuracy and when they came out with the little 85gr. bullet I hesitated at first. But then I got a sample pack of 15, loaded up a ladder using varget at 43, 43.5, 44, and 44.5 gr. for shots into an inch at 75 yds the first day, adjusted the scope and the next day put 3 rounds into a 1/2" at 100 yds, using 44.5gr varget lapua lrp brass, cci200 primers. primer was starting to flatten but not terribly, brass was fine. fps I think is up around 3200-3300, the chrono went on the blink after the first round of the ladder though. gonna use them on whitetails this year.

I think I will try some in my prc and try to get about 3500 with my 30" barrel just to see how they shoot

Yesterday in the ruger predator 22" barrel I got 3370-3390 over 4 shots with this 85 gr hh bullet in lapua lrp brass, 44 gr. Varget, cci200 lrp, primer was just a little flat. got 1" group at 100 yds , the 44.5 gr varget load shot better so going back to that. used a new magnetospeed sporter chrono. wrapped the end 6" of barrel with cloth friction tape and the magnetospeed stayed put.

Running for a while now. Flirting with the idea of building a .264 slower twist rate to see what they can really do.
I bought a .264 win when they came out in 1958. Maxed out 85gr Sierras and they would shoot flater than a 22-250 and equal a swift. No chronos then but I bet close to 3900. Had a 1-9 tw for 140s.
With today's powders I bet 4000 is in sight.
My 1-7.5 in the prc will hopefully get 3800 with the Hammers using a long barrel.

See my afternoon post about Hammer Bullets in a 6.5 PRC. The 85gr has the potential for velocity with a capital "V".

I tested the 85gr HH in my 6.5x47 Lapua this week. Max was 41.8gr Varget @ 3470 fps with a slight ejector imprint. Accuracy looked promising at 3400 fps.

Cm guys should get closer to 3500 fps.

Try some Absolute Hammers!
Supposedly you can pick up at least another 100fps with them.

Note, they (Hammer) reccomends a faster than normal powder with the Absolutes.

I not sure they make the 85 in the absolute design. I do have some in 123gr which are accurate and fast

What kind of accuracy are you getting at 3400? I have not tested for accuracy yet.
I bet they are accurate since they are machined to very close tolerances.

I only tested a ladder series to find max pressure, from 40.0gr to 41.8gr in 0.2gr increments. 41.8gr was my max at 3470 fps. I will test for accuracy next around 41.0gr and 3400 fps

that 85hh is a sweet shooting bullet. .003 or so neck tension and a lee fcd crimp die can do wonders for even better accuracy from the hammer bullets. just wanted to throw that out there.

Charlie, I have done both but with these 85gr hh bullets I am seating kinda deep and seating in the first groove. hammer bullets can usually take alot of jump, I know mine is over .150 maybe more and it shoots these lights out. started with a light crimp and a 1" group and adjusted the crimp a little heavier maybe another 1/8 turn and it went to 1/2" group 100 yds. If you try to get anywhere close to the lands with the 85hh there wont be enough bullet seated in the neck imo. kip

seating and crimping in the first groove with the 85 for my gun. last season I hunted with the117sh .264 bullet and seated it out further and crimped on top of a pdr rib or as you say full diameter but that bullets design and length allowed me to do whatever I wanted as the shank section is so long on the shock hammers. there are some very knowledgable hammer shooters that always crimp in a groove with the lee fcd die. you do either want it dead center of the groove or right on top of a rib, if you end up on a slope the OAL can move when you crimp. thats what they say anyway. kip
