Hall of Fame. Questions about short range and Long range benchrest

Mulligan

Silver $$ Contributor
I have been looking for information about the short range benchrest Hall of Fame.
I found the attached 1972 Rifle Magazine article.
It lists the nationals as the sole match for acquiring HoF points.

Is it just the NBRSA Nationals? Or does it also include the IBS Nationals?
Any other matches?

What about Long Range?

Who are the governing bodies?

Update on the United States Benchrest Hall of Fame as of December 2019.

The United States Benchrest Hall of Fame was established by the staff of Rifle Magazine in 1972. It set the criteria for induction to shoot one’s way into the Hall by acquiring ten points by winning yardages, grand aggregates or the Three-Gun championship at the IBS and NBRSA Group Nationals.
The following is a high-level update of the United States Benchrest Hall of Fame based on the results after the 2019 IBS and NBRSA Nationals. The Hall is administered by Rex Reneau who will make the presentations sometime during 2020.

First off, there was some fine shooting at the NBRSA Nationals at Phoenix by Paul Mitchell, who literally shot his way into the Hall of Fame in one nationals. He had six points prior to last week but attained ten more at Phoenix for a total of 16. That is certainly some outstanding shooting! Congratulations Paul.

Also at Phoenix, Mike Conry attained three points which added to his nine going into the week, which pushed Mike over the threshold. Fine shooting Mike and congratulations.

Of note also is the fine shooting by Ed Adams at Phoenix, who won the two yardages in Heavy Varmint, and of course the HV Grand Aggregate. This four-point feat brought Ed's points total to nine; which has him knocking on the door.

One last comment, Wayne Campbell's outstanding shooting at the IBS Nationals at Holton. MI earlier this year, where he won eight points, brought his lifetime total to 56. This allowed Wayne to move past Lester Bruno into second place. Lester has 50 points life-to-date, certainly no small feat; plus Lester still continues to post great results after some 40 years of competition. Congratulations Wayne and Lester on outstanding representation of the sport.

And, of course, it goes without saying that the best group benchrest shooter of all time is Tony Boyer; who has a lifetime total of 176 points. We know that Tony and the sport suffered a tremendous loss this past year when his wife Faye passed. Faye is the only female member of the United States Benchrest Hall of Fame and will be sorely missed.

The complete summary in Excel format will be posted on the NBRSA website. The totals for the Hall members through October 2019 are as follows:

If I understand this correctly,
Short range BR has a national H of F, but long range does not. Individual long range clubs recognize superior shooting accomplishments but there is no national system?

In short range, what governing body manages the records?

Boyer darn sure put some distance between himself and the nearest competition, WOW!

Clay, @Mulligan

The Short Range HOF (100/200 yards) is not governed by the NBRSA or IBS. Instead it’s governed by the HOF members. just thought I’d throw that out.

The NBRSA has a long range HOF.. The IBS does not. However the IBS has programs such as Long Range Marksman (1000 yard life time accomplishments) Precision Rifleman Rankings which includes IBS group, score and 600 yard Benchrest (life time accomplishments). Plus Shooter of the year programs for 600/1000 short range group and score. The IBS does have a score shooter HOF.

I’m sure you already knew most or all of this. But for other’s information who did not.

Bart,
Thanks for posting this, I’m not sure why I’m just seeing it but thank you all the same.

I did not know the short range HOF members were the gate keepers for their respective programs, that’s actually pretty darn cool.
