H4831 or IMR4831

I inherited a 5 gallon keg of powder from my father. The can is labeled 4831. He bought the powder in the mid 1960's. I don't know if it is H4831 or IMR4831. Any help on identifying this powder would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely it's the old H-4831 that got Hodgen in the powder business to begin with, that used to sell for about a quarter a pound.

Treat it like any other powder for load development, start low and work your way up.

One of my concerns about this powder is the use of magnum primers. I would like to reload 30-06 rounds with 180 gr. bullets. The Speer manual recomends magnum primers with H-4831 but not with IMR-4831. If it turns out to be IMR-4831, could I run into problems using the magnum primers.

Lee, You will be fine if you start out low and work up even with the magnum primers. Bill

If I remember correctly IMR 4831 was brought out by Dupont in the early 1970's and would have been in a metal 8 lb can. I'm sure what you have is H 4831. Use the data for IMR 4831 to work up loads as IMR 4831 is slightly faster burning and you will be safe. I don't think you will need Magnum primers unless it is 40 below zero. But, work up loads with which ever primer you like. It is pretty hard to get an overload in a 30-06 as the case just won't hold much more than a maximum load. Good luck.
